The allotted spending budget for education in California has dwindled in recent years resulting in cuts to extra curricular activities, such as band, choir and drama, teacher and educational staff lay offs, and the closing of many area schools. The San Juan Unified School District has had its share of pink slips handed out and has seen student programs cut from schools over the last few years. The hardest situation is when the school district has no choice but to close schools. Students, teachers and school staff are being displaced as a result of forced school closures. Students are having to adapt to new campus surrounds and people while teachers are either placed into other schools, or they may decide to retire.
One Carmichael grade school will be facing this very thing at the end of the school year in June. This school has been described by school employees as safe and caring with teachers always willing to help and teach the children. Garfield Elementary School is located very close to the San Juan Unified School District Office, which makes for talk of the possibility that the elementary school may become another educational office building for the district, as closed San Juan schools have been converted so in the past.
Thursday, May 6, will not only be Garfield Elementary’s last open house, but it will also be the school’s good-bye closing ceremony. A brief ceremony will recognize the 56 years of wonderful memories and history that took place at Garfield. It w
