WEAC president Mary Bell and AFSCME 24's Marty Beil address the anti-democratic steps taken by Scott Walker and Senate Republicans. Bell urges teachers to report to work tomorrow as next steps are explored. Beil urges peaceful demostration and channeling of energies into recall process vs. 8 Senate Republicans.
Statement from WEAC President Mary Bell on Senate vote
Posted: 3/9/2011 7:37:36 PM
Tonight, Senate and Assembly Republicans pushed forward an extreme power grab with an unconscionable maneuver that split collective bargaining off from the fiscal items in the budget repair bill – rigging an 18-to-1 vote in the Senate. The Assembly will vote tomorrow.
The following can be attributed to WEAC President Mary Bell:
“This is heart wrenching and unconscionable – and we won’t back down. For weeks our members have pushed forward with aggressive advocacy to have their voices heard about the need to protect their rights. We’ve won the battle in the court of opinion – and we’ve exposed the truth behind Governor Walker and Legislative Republican’s motives.
“I know this isn’t over. We are outraged, hurt and betrayed – but he will not break us.
“I ask Wisconsin’s educators to be at work tomorrow as we coordinate with the Labor

If you’ve been following along in my last post, you know the news: the Wisconsin State Senate rushed through and passed a bill that strips collective bargaining rights from most public employees. The vote in the State Senate, entirely composed of Republicans, was 18-1; only moderate Dale Schultz voted no. The budget repair
Wisconsin GOP just split the bill removing financial portions in order to vote on collective bargaining alone. It was reported earlier today that this might happen.
So much for the Budget Repair Bill being about the budget.
Listen with caution. Woody could make you tear up…
E.M. Ployd, The Ghost of Jobs Had Past, is the creator of the We Party and an unrelenting supporter of the Labor Movement. Ployd, now deceased, is rumored to have gone on an "eternal strike" in 2004. The Ployd void may never be filled.
Moments after convening a conference committee announced this afternoon, the WI Senate passed an amended version of the budget repair bill.
Sen. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, was the only member to vote against it.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, told Barca the bill was the same one the Assembly voted for almost 60 hours with some changes, but he did not detail what they were other than reading a statement at the beginning of the meeting that the revised bill would not trigger the constitutional requirement of 20 members being present for a vote on a fiscal bill.
