California still awash in guns despite pioneering gun regulations - by Louis Freedberg

Despite being ranked ahead of every other state on gun controls, California still faces enormous challenges in how to reduce gun violence as a result of the millions of weapons already in circulation in the state and the complexity of laws intended to regulate them. These are the stark figures: Since 1991, close to 9 million guns were sold legally in California alone. Only about 1 percent of...

On Guns, America Stands Out

and not in a good way.  I have borrowed the title of this column in tomorrow's New York Times by Charles M. Blow.
It is relatively short on Blow's words, but perhaps all you need to know is his opening paragraph:
Sometimes I think the best argument is raw data. This is one of those times.
Most of the column is taken up by a chart of data - on guns and deaths in the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, OECD.  You should look at the chart.  But BLow provides us with the only information we really need from the chart:
Among the O.E.C.D. countries that the World Bank groups as “high income,” America has the highest gun homicide rate, the highest number of guns per capita and the highest rate of deaths

Rauner still ranting against unions

Fred Klonsky drawing.
Republican union-hater and charter school maven, Bruce Rauner is at it again. In a Sun-Times Op-Ed piece,Thursday, Rauner let loose his venom towards labor uniona and collective-bargaining rights and called for turning Illinois into a right-to-work state like Tea Party guvs did in Michigan and Indiana.

Rauner claims that busing the unions will make Illinois a more attractive place for corporate investment.
"As employers and

Daily Kos: Already a school with teachers with guns:

Already a school with teachers with guns

in Harrold TX, as reported in this piece from the National School Board Association, there are already teachers and other employees concealed carrying at the community's sole school.   The rationalization is as follows:
According to the Associated Press (AP) as reported in the Times-Picayune, in the community’s lone school in Harrold, Texas, some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons. In remote Harrold, the nearest sheriff’s office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know – and trust – one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school.“We don’t have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution,” Superintendent David Thweatt said. “A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master’s degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children.”
Here's my concern:  even with extensive firearms training, one has not been trained for firing while being fired at.  As part of a political leadership program we got to experience part of the training Virginia State Police go through, computerized simulations.  How easy it is even without someone firing at you to make mistakes.  One can easily get tunnel vision as does a quarterback locked on a receiver who does not see the safety who will

Stand Your PLAYGROUND? HELL NO! Keep The NRA AWAY From Our Kids!!

I haven't commented on the heartbreaking events in Newtown because I have been, well, heartbroken.  I have twin six year olds, the same grade as the beautiful babies that were killed, and I haven't been able to so much as think about this without bawling.  Writing about it has simply been out of the question.

But yesterday, in the car line waiting to pick up my girls from school - where an armed police officer has been standing guard all week - that sadness turned to outrage.

The turning point came at the end of a Fresh Air segment called Assault-Style Weapons In The Civilian Market.  Terry Gross interviewed Tom Diaz, a senior policy analyst at the Violence Policy Center, which conducts gun-

The short and medium term effect of the stra... more »

You’ll participate in a few blog roundups, showcase your work, and talk to some of the more influential parties in... more »
