Fourth-graders who flunk reading have faces marked

DECLO, Idaho — A fourth-grade teacher in southern Idaho is being criticized after having her students use permanent markers to draw on the faces of classmates who failed to meet reading goals.
Some parents and administrators say the punishments given to nine students in Summer Larsen's class were inappropriate and left the children feeling shamed.
Cindy Hurst said recently her 10-year-old son came home from school Nov. 5 with his entire face — including his eyelids — scribbled on with green, red and purple markers.
"He was humiliated, he hung his head and wanted to go wash his face," Hurst told The Times-News of Twin Falls ( http://bit.ly/QMwMTJ). "He knows he's a slow reader. Now he thinks he should be punished for it."
Larsen, who has taught at the school for six years, didn't respond to requests for comment. But Cassia County School District Superintendent Gaylen Smyer confirmed what took place in her classroom,

Hostess closing all plants and laying off 18,500 to avoid labor deal

Texas-based Hostess Brands, the company that makes Twinkies, Hostess Cupcakes and Wonder Bread has announced that it is laying off all of its 18,500 employees and closing all of its U.S. facilities in response to a labor strike that has paralyzed the company since last weekend.
Hostess announced on Friday morning that workers had failed to meet a Thursday deadline to bring factory outputs back up to normal levels and end their strike.  The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union began the strike last weekend in protest of conditions imposed on the company under the terms of its most recent bankruptcy filing.
The union called the contract “outrageous.”  The company, which stopped contributing to worker pensions in August, 2011, had announced that worker wages would be cut by 8 percent.
“You put in the time, you put in the years, I mean, we all have dedicated our lives to the company and they just don’t appreciate it,” said one worker.
On Monday, Greg Rayburn, CEO of Hostess, which also owns Dolly Madison bakeries and Merita bread, announced that the company intended to close plants in St. Louis, Cincinnati and Seattle in response to the strike.  St. Louis mayor Francis Slay said in an interview on Tuesday that he was given notice earlier this year about the closing in his city.
“I was told months ago they were planning on closing the site in St. Louis,” he said. “And there was no indication at that time that it had anything to do with the strike the workers were waging.”
Bakers’ union representative Frank Hurst told the Kansas City Business Journal that Rayburn’s attempt to blame the closures on the strike is part of “a disturbing pattern by the company of issuing public statements that are erroneous at best and disingenuous at worst.”
Hostess Brands filed for Chapter 11 protection in January of this year, its second bankruptcy, the first having taken place in 2004.  A statement on the company’s website said that Hostess products which have already been baked will be shipped to stores and sold and bakery retail stores will stay open to sell through their supplies.

Kimble's Corner: Congressman Kimble Demands Snack Cake Bailout

Kimble's Corner: Congressman Kimble Demands Snack Cake Bailout:

Congressman Kimble Demands Snack Cake Bailout

Like any red-blooded patriotic American, I was horrified to hear that Hostess was going out of business.  Surely, a company that hasn't demanded concessions from its workers in over 7 years deserves a break.  I put this tragedy surely on the head of President Obama and his administration.   The American Snack Cake Industry must survive.  Our nation is too big for it to fail.   Courageous steps must be taken in order to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy golden sponge cake with rich creamy filling or a flaky crust with real fruit filling.  I am making my proposal respectfully to President Obama in the form of four non-negotiable demands.   Mr. President, do not let us go off this snack cake cliff:

1. Sign and executive order dismissing all Hostess Workers unwilling to work for what the company is offering.  In 1987, President Reagan courageously fired striking airline workers who asked for it.  Even your President Roosevelt ordered miners back into the mines at a time of national emergency.  This is a national emergency!

2. Provide tax breaks for snack cake creators.  We will not be out of this crisis until those with the resources and machinery to create snack cakes do so.   We must give targeted tax breaks not only to Hostess, but to

My Election Dashboard | Lefty Parent: My Election Dashboard by Cooper Zale My “ministry” is all about celebrating and championing human development at an individual and societal level. A key thread in that development (at both the individual and societal level) is our society’s transition from hierarchies of control towards circles of equals. So in that regard, what light (if any) does the recent election shed on our path forward? I’m a lover of lists, and here is my list of the areas of this transition that continue to be of most interest to me… *1. The engagement between youth and... more »
