Nelson Mandela Lives!!!
Nelson Mandela was referred to as a “civil rights leader” on NPR, and the NY Times called him an “emblem of peaceful resistance.” At the passing today of this good and great man, the “Revise-All-History-to-Your-Liking-Festivities” is set into high gear. Nelson Mandela was a fierce freedom fighter and a loving revolutionary who led the wide popular movement that toppled apartheid and inspired the e

Making judgments about technologies we haven’t used and don’t understand
George Couros says: “Kids don’t have enough balance.” “We are dumber because of technology.” “People are disconnected from one another because of how we use technology.” “Technology kills our face-to-face interactions.” In my travels, I have heard all of these arguments. … You will hear people say things like “Twitter is stupid.” Just to clarify, Twitter is a thing and can’t be stupid. It is the

Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s First Black President and Anti-Apartheid Leader, DIes
JOHANNESBURG—Nelson Mandela was a master of forgiveness. As head of state, the ex-boxer, lawyer and inmate lunched with th

De Blasio Picks Bratton to Head NYPD
The return of William Bratton as New York's top cop raises questions about how far reform of stop-and-frisk laws will go. Mayer-elect Bill De Blasio has extolled the incoming chief for implementing "constitutional" stop-and-frisk policies during his Los Angeles tenure.   Stop right there and frisk Bratton's LA record. State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Comments on Death of South African Leader

SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson issued the following statement today after the death of anti-apartheid leader and former South African President Nelson Mandela:
"With the passing of Nelson Mandela, the world has lost one of its greatest teachers—a model of compassion, strength, and peace. The death Thursday of South Africa’s liberation leader and first democratic president Nelson Mandela triggered an unprecedented worldwide chorus of awed respect. Statesmen, resistance leaders, Nobel laureates and prisoners of conscience have died before, but never had one man united such...

I had thought for a long while that it was futile to wish for Mandela to live for much longer.  He was very old and had been through so much.  And so he has passed. But he gave so much to this world and if it was only one thing (and I come back to this again and again as a topic) - it is not hope or fighting the good fight.  It is resiliency.  The ability to believe that you can and will overcome

Today, we have lost one of history’s great leaders. I extend my deepest condolences to the Mandela family and to the government and people of South Africa, the Republic that President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela helped free from the cruelty and hatred of apartheid and forged anew into a rainbow nation of hope and healing. I will always cherish the honor and memory of knowing him. Even as we mourn, w
