A Brief Audit of Bill Gates’ Common Core Spending

August 27, 2013

This is a post about Bill Gates and his money, a brief audit of his Common Core (CCSS) purchases. Before I delve into Gates accounting, allow me to set the stage with a bit of CCSS background.
It is important to those promoting CCSS that the public believes the idea that CCSS is “state-led.” The CCSS website reports as much and names two organizations as “coordinating” the “state-led” CCSS: The National Governors Association (NGA), and the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Interestingly, the CCSS website makes no mention of CCSS “architect” David Coleman:
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).  The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce.[Emphasis added.]
Nevertheless, if one reviews this 2009 NGA news release on those principally involved in CCSS development, one views a listing of 29 individuals associated with Student Achievement Partners, ACT, College Board, and Achieve. In truth, only 2 out of 29 members are not affiliated with an education company.
CCSS as “state-led” is fiction. Though NGA reports 29 individuals as involved with

Introducing Savvy Squash – Who needs BESE? Apparently not LDOE. . .

Posted on August 27, 2013

Ok, now I think people are becoming inspired or starting to make fun of my Crazy Crawfish motif! I’m not sure if I should be flattered or insulted?  No matter, Savvy Squash is here to explain some of the nuances and private backdoor deals of Louisiana’s Accountability system. It appears the system is changing again, but this time entirely secretly, even from a BESE that rubberstamps everything DOE does.  The only reason I can see for doing this is to conceal what they are doing from the public and the US Department of Education.  It also appears they are not turning over the list of AUS schools in a prompt manner and formulating realistic alternatives for students so as to leave children no other “choices” but Course Choice which has no standards, no evaluation methods, no requirements for certified teachers (or requirements for having teachers at all), and actually no money to fund it as many students who tried to apply this year found out the hard way.  Admittedly I was having trouble conveying what I was being told so I asked for some contributions to tell it like it is. Without further ado, allow me to present the latest Crazy Crawfish Blog contributor, Savvy Squash.
Who needs BESE? Apparently not LDOE. . .
The LDOE appears to be by-passing BESE and creating/implementing policy (all on their own.) This is shocking not because it’s occurring but because BESE has rubber-stamped almost everything LDOE has

Alex Lifeson of Rush Demonstrates How To Deal With NYC DOE Investigators

Alex Lifeson turned 60 yesterday. Please take time to wish Alex a happy birthday in your own special way.

We've all been told never to speak with an investigator from Office of Special Investigations or Special Commissioner's Office. I suggest we take it one step further. We as teachers need to look to Alex Lifeson on how to actually comport ourselves while being interviewed by NYCDOE
investigators.

Paymon Who?
I had the great pleasure of talking for while today with a teacher from Newark. This is someone who is very up on education policy and politics, so I thought he was the perfect person to ask about the new state superintendent of Camden, Paymon Rouhanifard. After all, according to Chris Christie, the governor who installed Rouhanifard: Paymon has a proven track record of improving the lives of hun

Students Explain: “What Makes a Good Teacher?”
Bill Gates has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in search of an answer to the question: “What makes a good teacher?” Arne Duncan, building on his record in Chicago, knows what makes a good teacher: It is the teacher who raises test scores, and he has spent billions of dollars to induce every state to agree with him. Here, the students of Madison, Connecticut explain what makes a good teacher.

Local Control Funding Formula - California Teachers Association

Local Control Funding Formula - California Teachers Association:

PROCESS FOR LCFF IMPLEMENTATION HAPPENING QUICKLY

The Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) - a new funding formula that will increase school funding and direct more resources to California's highest-need students - is on the horizon. The LCFF gives districts more local control and flexibility to spend the money, delivering needed services to our most needy students.
Built on a need criterion, target base grants will be distributed in certain target amounts with those amounts rising when the concentration of English learner, low-income, and foster youth grow. The LCFF is targeted to add $2.1 billion in funding for the 2013-14 school year. When fully implemented, the LCFF is targeted to increase California's education spending by $18 billion.
The Governor's office, the CA Dept. of Ed & the State Board of Ed held regional sessions earlier this month to learn about priorities for best outcomes and a spending plan, especially for the first uncertain year of its implementation.
