Teachers For Social Justice: Mass Rally to Support CTU - Sat, Sept 15th:

Mass Rally to Support CTU - Sat, Sept 15th

SEPTEMBER 14, 2012 LEAVE A COMMENT

There will be tens of thousands of people in Union Park tomorrow. TSJ will meet at the left of the speakers platform (when facing it). Look for both TSJ banners on sticks (see photo below) and join us there. Meet at 11:00 AM, things will be crowded!

Organize for this. Reach out personally, and call/text friends and family (etc), to be there too. We need massive numbers to demonstrate our support for the teachers and to show our collective power. We need to give Rahm and the CEOs, bankers, and real estate magnates who run our schools something to think about as they prepare to sabotage public education, close 100-150 schools, and privatize half the system.

Picture educational apartheid: a school district with some good public schools (mostly in affluent and more white neighborhoods, and selective schools), charter schools like mushrooms in the South and West sides run by big charter/contractor chains, and a few minimalist public schools as safety valves for students pushed out of charters. This will mean the loss of hundreds of Black teachers as well. Looks like New Orleans and Detroit.

The collective power and unity built through this strike is a precondition for the fight ahead of us.

Are they scraping by or making bank? Some data behind the education debate.

| Fri Sep. 14, 2012 3:00 AM PDT
The Chicago teacher strike has resurrected the question at the center of much edupontificating: Are American teachers underpaid or overpaid?
For some perspective, we've compiled data on the average wages of elementary-school, middle-school, and high school teachers in more than 300 metropolitan areas. As you'll see, most teachers make more than $45,320, the average yearly wage for all occupations tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Yet the range of what they earn varies widely: Elementary-school teachers in Jefferson City, Missouri, earn an average of $37,090; their colleagues in Long Island, New York, earn an average of $90,560.
Click on a city on the map below for more information on teachers' average wages within its greater metropolitan area. Note: Earnings do not include benefits.

Just going to pile onto the much-made observation that the CTU strike has awakened something across the land. People understand what this is about; they really do. Before this action, you'd see some bullshit in the press, like this piece written by some choady fellow from Arkansas, and there'd be very little commentary after it. But now you see all kinds of people jumping in to say something nice about teachers and about how much they support the CTU.

So I thank Rahm Emanuel for picking a fight with Karen Lewis and the teachers she democratically represents. It's going to be helpful next year, when he's trying to close 100 neighborhood schools and open 60 charter schools--- for people to remember that Rahm's ideas are the ideas of the far right, of the arch-conservatives, and that he's in bed with everyone from the EAG to the birther Donald Trump. Every time I see one of these Fire the teachers! Open charter schools! bromides in the press, it's either written by some pimply white person from the suburbs* or from someone out of state, or from someone paid by Sam Zell or funded by Bill Gates, or from someone paying himself an obscene salary to run obedience schools on the public dime, or someone flying in from Aspen with the grifter son of Marian Wright Edelman in tow.

When you look at the people trying to make the neighborhood schools better for all the kids in all the

Charter Schools - Dividing Communities since 1991

Meanwhile, Over On The Fringe

Look what Rahm's far-right, non-Chicagoan allies in the legislature are up to. I may be mistaken but I believe that if you polled the four legislators in the article, not a one of them would even agree that evolution happened. These are the folks Rahm runs with---- super uninformed charter zealots.
