NGA “Corporate Fellows”: Providing Governors Ideas That Work

For four of the five years that I taught in Northwestern Georgia, I taught at an alternative school. Every time I received a new student, it meant that the student had been expelled from a district public school. I had a student who built a bomb and discharged it on a principal’s lawn.  I had a student who attempted to build a bomb, and it discharged on him. I had a student who was an accessory to a drive-by shooting. I had a student who was a victim of a shooting. I had a few students who were suspects and/or charged with murder.
It was a tough crowd, needless to say.
My job was very secure. No one wanted to replace me when I left to pursue my doctorate.
On one occasion, my students asked me if I would arrange it so that they could take archery.
Not a chance.
Some “opportunities” just should not happen. My highly impulsive, volatile, alternative school students with bows and arrows was one.
The National Governor’s Association (NGA) and a “corporate fellows program” is another.
And yet, NGA does indeed offer a “corporate fellows program.”
In this atmosphere of the corporate takeover of public education, such an allegiance ought not to be.
NGA is part owner of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
NGA is pushing an entire spectrum of reforms that benefits corporate America.

Quiet and Submissive | Connected Principals:

Quiet and Submissive

“Being quiet and being submissive. I think that’s frankly the only thing being taught right now. ..how do you be submissive? How do you sit patiently and be disengaged for an hour and take it?” Sal Khan
I have talked to a few educators in the field that have children in schools that have told me they question the value of some of the assignments that the teachers of their children are receiving at home.  What one of them shared with me is that although they disagreed with the assignment, they bit their tongue, said nothing about the assignment, and told their child that they had to do it because they were told to.
So in an education system where are are promoting critical thinking, is teaching a child simply to be compliant really beneficial?
Before we talk about the impact that this has on students, let’s think as educators what we would want in our own environment.  As a teacher, would you prefer to work in an environment where their principal (who is their boss), wants feedback on the things that are happening in the school, and actively listens?  This doesn’t mean they always agree, but

We active and retired teachers refuse to be silenced or kept in silence. | Reclaim Reform:

We active and retired teachers refuse to be silenced or kept in silence.

Where is the leadership of the Illinois Education Association? Please tell us what is happening now that the Illinois legislature has approved the pillage of pensions for active and retired teachers via SB1 on December 3rd as our early Christmas present for 2013.
We are not some kind of stereotypical grandparents complaining about not hearing from the kids. We are the people who paid into the retirement system with 9.4% of our gross income for decades. We also paid our union dues in addition. We need to keep informed about current and future income. It pays for food, medication, rent/mortgages, and other necessities.
Silence IEAThe IEA silence is destroying morale.
Thankfully, the Illinois Retired Teacher Association has filed a lawsuit that even the national media has covered. (Read HERE.) Our union leadership has semi-assuredsome of us today, December 28th, via email.
