 — Going green has more than one meaning for schools in Oceanside, where a recycling program is predicted to save the district at least $100,000 annually by 2020.
The Oceanside Unified School District adopted a zero-waste resolution on Jan. 21. Similar to a move by the city of Oceanside four years ago, the district’s goal is to recycle 75 to 95 percent of its waste by 2020.
The district’s plan is funded through the city’s Zero Waste Schools Program, which provides each participating school with $3,000 to $5,000 in startup costs. The partnership, believed to be the first of its kind in the state, was recognized at Palmquist School on Friday morning with an event attended by Mayor Jim Wood, Oceanside Unified School District Superintendent Larry Perondi, students, parents, staff and volunteers.
The event was held in front of school’s garden, which is tended by students as part of their life sciences studies. Besides supplying food for the Palmquist cafeteria, the garden contains a compost area to help the school toward its goal of 100 percent recycling.
Colleen Foster, solid waste management analyst for the city, said the OUSD program could be a model for other school districts in the state.
With six OUSD schools already practicing a zero-waste plan, the district plans to introduce two more schools each semester until all 23 campuses are recycling.

Don't Underestimate New York City PUBLIC Schools!

TODAY, 30 STUDENTS FROM A PUBLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL CALLED WEST SIDE COLLABORATIVE CAME TO SIT IN ON AN UPPER LEVEL UNDERGRADUATE COURSE I TEACH, CALLED "THE WORKER IN AMERICAN LIFE,." BROUGHT BY THEIR TEACHER, VICTORIA THOMAS-RAHIMAN, WHO WAS ONCE MY STUDENT. I WAS CONCERNED THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CLASS DISCUSSIONS- WHICH WAS ON WAL-MART'S LABOR PRACTICES AND ROLE IN THE AMERICAN ECONOMY- WITHOUT A LOT OF GUIDANCE FROM ME. BUT AFTER A FIVE MINUTE LECTURE TO GET THEM ORIENTED, I LEAPED DIRECTLY INTO THE CLASS I HAD PLANNED, BEGINNING WITH TWO MUSIC VIDEOS WHICH DRAMATIZED THE TRAVAILS OF LOW WAGE WORKERS IN THE US, AND WHEN I ASKED FOR COMMENTS, THE STUDENTS FROM WEST SIDE COLLABORATIVE RAISED THEIR HANDS AS MUCH AS STUDENTS IN MY CLASS, AND OFFERED REMARKS WHICH WERE AT TIMES STARTLING IN THEIR INSIGHT AND DEPTH. MY STUDENTS WERE BOTH STUNNED AND EXCITED BY THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS AND THE CLASS BECAME THE FOCAL POINT OF AN INCREDIBLE DISCUSSION OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PART OF THE WORKING POOR IN THE UNITED STATES, SOMETHING WHICH THE WEST SIDE COLLABORATIVE KNEW FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE FAR MORE THAN MY WONDERFUL FORDHAM STUDENTS. IT WAS ALSO CLEAR THAT ECONOMIC INEQUALITY AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE WERE ISSUES THEY HAD DISCUSSED IN THEIR CLASSES, AND AT TIMES IN THEIR FAMILIES, AND THEY HAD STRONG OPINIONS ABOUT THIS THAT MY OWN STUDENTS FOUND MYSELF LISTENING TO INTENTLY.

What made the whole experience so remarkable was not only the difference in age between the two groups, but also the difference in background . My Fordham class is about 2/3 white and 1/3 students of color, with many coming from middle class and upper middle class families. Why Raising The Standards Won’t Make Kids Read

I recently sat in on a class in which none of the students had done the reading. It was an 11th grade English class; they were reading a fat canonical American novel, maybe 350 pages long. And none of them had read it—at least not the chapter they were supposed to have read the night before.

The teacher, a smart, dedicated older man, stood in front of the class trying to lead a class discussion. Crickets.
As the teacher stood lobbing question after question, the kids sat at their desks making eye contact with no one, shifting uneasily in their seats and waiting for the time to pass so they could leave.
Reader, I’ve been there. Maybe not in a situation where all of my students didn’t do the reading, but often when a very substantial number did not, a situation that would inevitably put me into a panic of misery, shame and frustration. What should I have done? What was I doing wrong? If the kids didn’t read the book, how could they write an essay that meant anything?
So as I sat in the back of that incredibly awkward class, I emailed a friend of mine who teaches in South L.A., one of the best English teachers I know, asking her what percentage of her students usually did the reading. “Half,” she emailed back. “Less if the reading is especially challenging.”
I recently asked another friend, an exceptionally dedicated and motivated English teacher, how many of her 35 students in the class I’m watching probably did the reading every night. She thought a moment, counting in her head. “About nine,” she said finally.
Here’s something I’ve seen over and over and have personally experienced: if you teach in a community where kids didn’t get the enrichment of preschool, may have attended terrible elementary schools, may have stressful or chaotic home lives and often live in very crowded situations where they have no space to themselves and sometimes have to Why Raising The Standards Won’t Make Kids Read | Gatsby In L.A.:

LAUSD'S LATEST SCAM- CLEARLY FALSE ASSERTIONS OF TEACHER OVERPAYMENT

Overpayment.jpg
(Mensaje se repite en Español)

If you are a current or retired employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) there is yet another assault you might find yourself being subjected to- the clearly false allegation that you were overpaid by LAUSD, when the reality is that there is a greater likelihood and in many cases clear and convincing evidence that you were significantly underpaid. In the last few years, LAUSD has been in the process of going after thousands of teachers for these alleged overpayments without any evidence to substantiate that this ever took place and for the sole motive of lessening its bottom line at any cost.

If LAUSD had any real interest in determining the truth, all it would have to do is take your gross salary from any year's last December salary stub and compare it with where you are supposed to be on the LAUSD salary scale to see whether you were either under or overpaid. Rather than do this LAUSD has turned over these false overpayment claims to a collection agency, even though such action is clearly illegal. Worse yet, teachers who have already been targeted for removal from the district on other trumped up charges have found themselves significantly more likely to have LAUSD come after them for these bogus overpayment charges that LAUSD refuses to substantiate with any documentation.

What is making this possible is the LAUSD payroll revision disasterof several years ago with all of it's yet unsettled payroll errors that contrary to claims in the L.A. Times has not come to an end. On the contrary, this payroll revision disaster can now make lemonade out of the lemon that it continues to be by obfuscating under supposed LAUSD claims of "annualization" under which "justification" it claims that teachers were overpaid, when in fact they were not.

One of the many cases that teachers have come to me with, when LAUSD sends a collection agency after them right off the bat is the following: This teacher received a letter from the district that LAUSD had years after the fact, "Discovered overpayments to his salary  LAUSD'S LATEST SCAM- CLEARLY FALSE ASSERTIONS OF TEACHER OVERPAYMENT - Perdaily.com:

Major Kansas Papers Ignore Koch Connection to Anti-Teachers’ Rights Legislation

Three major newspapers in Kansas have ignored the role of funding from the Koch brothers in the passage of legislation that strips teachers in the state of their right to due process before they are fired, a longstanding right that gives teachers the ability to challenge dismissals.

Kansas State Legislature Passes Bill Stripping Teachers' Right To Due Process
MSNBC.com: "Kansas Bill Kills Long-Held Teacher Rights." Following a heated debate, the Kansas State Legislature passed a bill, HB2506, on Sunday, April 6, that "kills long-held teacher rights" to due process. According to MSNBC.com, the bill passed "over the objections of hundreds of teachers and activists" protesting the bill (emphasis added):
Despite huge majorities in the state House and Senate, the bills passed narrowly over the objections of hundreds of teachers and activists who packed the galleries to protest the bill.
Until now, a teacher with three years of experience was guaranteed the right to receive a written reason for possible termination and the right to appeal the decision. Teachers in Kansas have had the right to due process since 1957. Without it, a teacher could be fired for being gay, or disagreeing politically with an administrator, and have no recourse. [MSNBC.com, 4/7/14]
Legislation Was Pushed By Group Connected To Billionaire Koch Brothers
Washington Post's Valerie Strauss: Group Pushing Legislation Backed By "Extreme Conservative Billionaires Charles And David Koch." Washington Post education blogger Valerie Strauss, citing an Associated Press story, noted how teachers' rights "go away" under the new legislation, as well as the Koch funding tied to Americans for Prosperity, the group pushing the bill:
According to this Associated Press story, Kansas teachers who have been on the job for at least three years have certain rights when they are being fired. They must be told in writing why the action was taken and they have the right to request a review of the decision. Under the new law, those rights go away.
Pushing the effort to end teacher tenure, the AP reported, was a
