Why Is A "Fox News Contributor And NJ Democratic Strategist" Hatikvah's Spokeswoman?

Before the suburban charter backlash gained momentum, a handful of suburban charters managed to open their doors.  We have seen the kind of dramatic upheaval this has caused in community after community, when parents and residents realize that local tax dollars are diverted to charters that serve only a small fraction of a town's children.  More often than not it is the lack of local control over these decisions that really gets everyone's blood boiling.

In the case of Hatikvah, we have seen lawsuits back and forth between the district and the charter. The district initially sued claiming that Hatikvah had not met enrollment requirements, and the courts said, "Meh."

And then two East Brunswick women (full disclosure, I know both well as we are organizers for Save Our

LAUSD; HOW CRENSHAW STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND TEACHERS CAN FINALLY SUCCEED

Crenshaw Cougars.jpg

There was a meeting last week at the Radical Women center for the Crenshaw Cougar Coalition to discuss how to address the attack on Crenshaw High School by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and its proposed reconstitution of the school. Although Beatriz Paez, who chaired the meeting, said they were interested in formulating a plan to address the proposed reconstitution, along with magnets, and ultimate privatization/charterization of Crenshaw. When all was said and done by the end of the meeting, it was clear that those running the meeting did not have a clue how to proceed. And even though they said they were interested in hearing about viable elements of such a plan, the reality of this meeting showed a complete unwillingness to develop a more pragmatic approach where the community would take responsibility for Crenshaw based on framing the students, parents, and teachers vision of what an excellent public education would look like at Crenshaw. While the Crenshaw High School community might not presently have such a clear and concise vision, the networking necessary to achieve it is well within their grasp, if they deign to reach out from this long segregated community.

Even though the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) completely ignores

Colorado Parent & Teacher Offers Advice & Insights on Opting Out of TCAP

Guest post by Darciann Samples, Colorado Parent and National Board Certified Teacher
The following is a letter from Darciann to all parents and students in Colorado who are interested in learning more about opting out of TCAP.
Hello,
Here is the first update on our second experience with opting out of high-stakes testing in Colorado, a state with a statute requiring that all students participate in the test.  Students who attend school at any time during the testing window will be tested.
Last year, we sent an opt-out letter the day before testing, and spent the weekend facing calls and e-mails requesting a response.  We kept our ten year old son out of school for three days, were threatened with truancy court, and sent him back to school facing twelve hours of assessments.  The make-up exams were administered in increasingly intimidating circumstances but he held firm and refused to test.  The tests in the classroom were better, due to a kind teacher who recognized his right to refuse.
This year, my son told me he planned to “fake it” so as not to face the wrath of his unpleasant middle school reading teacher.  As a teacher myself, I decided to pay her the professional courtesy of letting her know his intentions.  I wanted to give her the opportunity to simply leave my son alone and allow him to sit quietly in the back of the room during the test.  His “refusal” would not affect her in the same way a failing score would.  I arrived early for my appointment and decided at the last minute to speak with the principal instead.  I had printed a copy of the state’s PowerPoint training for TCAP administrationhttp://www.cde.state.co.us/assessment/documents/training/2013_TCAP_TestProctorTraining.ppt x , complete with the trainer’s notes of how to manage student behaviors.  Basically, teachers may not influence student performance in any way.  I know this, my son knows this, and now he knows we know this.

She still has had no nausea, her appetite holds.

I have a confession: I’ve never seen Beasts of the Southern Wild. As a relatively new parent, I don’t always have the time or the funds to make it out to the movies very often.
But that’s not the purpose for my essay because, when it comes out on Netflix, I know I have to watch. I, along with thousands of others, took issue with the Onion’s satirical tweet calling QuvenzhanĂ© a cunt. I “got” it. She’s such a sweet, little, innocent girl that the joke was made as a reflection of the speaker and not of QuvenzhanĂ© herself. In the context of the lukewarm Seth Farlene jokes at the Oscars and Django Unchained, this might have seemed innocuous to some.
It wasn’t. I found it disgusting.
In fact, I found it both sexist and racist, but for the purposes of this essay, I’ll speak to the race piece, especially

Kimble's Corner: Congressman Kimble Introduces Freedom to Commute Bill: Congressman Kimble Introduces Freedom to Commute Bill by Representative Kimble It was a rainy February morning in Oakdale. The Educated Reporter: Who Decides What's Off the Record?: Who Decides What's Off the Record? by Emily Richmond To do their jobs, education reporters on the federal beat depend on access to congressional staffers. But what happens when those staffers want anonymity while discussing policy at a public forum? I asked two reporters – Libby Nelson of Inside Higher Ed and Eric Kelderman of The Chronicle of Higher Education – to explain why they’re pushing back against what they contend is an unreasonable demand. When you read Nelson's and Kelderman's pieces at EdMedia Commons, you'll ... more »
