Beyond Achievement GAP, or it's the Opportunity Gap people!

Day 4,780 of NCLB's Reign Of Testing Terror.
Americans were told in 2001 that our education system was in crisis, and the solutions would be "Outcomes-based reforms," and NCLB would fix our schools.
Every child in grades 3 to 8 would be reading, writing, and doing math at grade level by 01/01/14. Never happened!
They promised they would reduce the Achievement Gap. Never happened!
They promise they would reduce racial isolation in our public schools. Never Happened!
They promise that new standards and testing would wipe away special needs and second language learner issues. Their solution simply make all children take the same test. Another  promised not delivered!

Over a trillion dollars federal tax dollars went to pushing new standards and testing and outcomes-based education reforms. 4,780 days later the data is in. Our children in grades 3 to 8 are not reading, writing, and doing math at grade level. I call this, the single largest policy failure in American education history.  A massive policy collaborative failure at the Federal level and state level.
No one in the United States Department of Education was ever asked to account for this policy failure, no one was fire, and no one was reprimanded. There were no legislative hearings held to question these policy failures. Not legislative hearing even as policy makers advocate once again new standards, new testing, and more "Out-Comes based solutions again.
I know of no legislators, policy makers, or USDE leaders in Washington DC advocating for any real significant change in policy. They advocate Common Core State Standards, new tests, more charter-schools, and every initiative is "Out-comes driven"

I can't help, but feel America's children, parents, teachers, and local schools are on their own. I do however suggest a different model for improving our public schools.
I propose shift to an "In-Put model. Others have advocated and are advocating for it. I suggest we drop the notion of “Out-Comes” based reforms, and put the Achievement Gap on the back burner.  I am not proposing we put special needs learners, children of color, or second language learners on the back burner. I want these learners on the front burner. We do that not by turning these learners into data, but by equalizing the learning field.
The time has come to advocate for "In-Put' based solutions. We don't need more outcomes data; we need to start collecting, analyzing, and supporting "In-Put solution

A Pervert Grows in Brooklyn Tech - southbronxschool

A Pervert Grows in Brooklyn Tech

As many others were I was appalled and sickened when I picked up the Daily News and read about the deviancy with students that Brooklyn Tech "teacher" Sean Shaynak allegedly committed.

According to the Daily News, Shaynake is accused of;
  • Taking a 15-year-old to a nude beach in New Jersey without permission and plying her with vodka, tequila and whisky until she passed out at his home.
  • Exchanging some 10,000 text messages with that same girl, in which he asked her to participate in lesbian sex with another student and told her about his experience with a mĂ©nage-Ă -trois and gay sex.
  • Giving another student perfect grades “regardless of the fact she did not do any assignments and left tests blank,” said prosecutor Joseph Mancino.
  • Forcing himself on that 18-year-old student when she resisted his attempt at intercourse.
  • Carrying on a “four-month sexual relationship” with yet another teen, which included a trip to an out-of-state gay-themed sex club where she watched him getting “serviced” by other men.
  • Taking that student on what prosecutors described as a “terror ride” from Queens to Brooklyn that ended with her hiding in the bushes and her teacher screaming and banging on his car. “He threatened to tell her parents,” Mancino said.
  • Sending full-frontal photos to four students, two of whom were minors.
  • Storing an extensive library of pornography in his computer, which included bestiality — sex acts between humans and dogs, horses and goat.
Yes, these all seem pretty damning. If true, it would be hard to disprove the allegations in regards to the full frontal monty shot and the text messages.

But what is this person thinking? He is a teacher, trusted to teach and protect the students he is charged with. Yes, a person who does such acts does not think of others and is selfish. Pedophiles usually are. If he was this hard up for attention and physical release and/or contact there were other ways, safer ways to satisfy his perversions.

But no matter how heinous the accusations are, no matter how angry we are, as parents of the http://www.southbronxschool.com:

Testing a kindergartner: How it feels as a teacher

kindegartner
I’m not sure where this was originally posted, I’ve seen it on various blogs and websites but apparently it was first seen on Opt Out Alachua Facebook page. The letter from this kindergarten teacher is poignant and very telling of where we have come in terms of the political/corporate/big money takeover of our public schools.
This is what they want to do with preschoolers if Proposition 1B passes.

September 7, 2014
Dear Facebook Friends,
I have just sent emails to my principal and CRT, the superintendent, my colleagues at school, the school board members, ACEA (local teachers’ union) and the Gainesville Sun. I have a letter ready to go to the parents of the children in my class, pending principal approval which is standard protocol.
WHY I AM REFUSING TO GIVE THE FAIR TEST TO MY KINDERGARTNERS!
We have given the FAIR assessment in the past but this year it was revamped. It does provide useful information, but nothing significantly superior to what a typical Kindergarten teacher would observe in her students. This year, it is more time consuming and more difficult. Kindergartners are required to take it on the computer using a mouse. FYI: Kindergartners aren’t born with mouse skills. Many of them are proficient on tablets or smartphones, but the mouse can be tricky. (While testing a child last week, she double-clicked which skipped a screen. This child double-clicked three times and triple clicked once. There is no way to go back. There is no way for the school administrator to go back and make a correction.) While we were told it takes about 35 minutes to administer, we are finding that in actuality, it is taking between 35-60 minutes per child.
This assessment is given one-on-one. It is recommended that both teacher and child wear headphones during this test. Someone has forgotten there are other five year olds in our care. There is no provision from the state for money for additional staff to help with the other children in the classroom while this testing is going on. A certified teacher has to give the test. If you estimate that it takes approximately 45 minutes per child to give this test and we have 18 students, the time it takes to give this test is 13 ½ instructional hours. If you look at the schedule, a rough estimate would be that it requires about one full week of instructional time to test all of the children.
Our Kindergarten teachers have been brainstorming ways to test and still instruct. The best option we have come up with is for teachers to pair up, with one teacher instructing two classes while the other teacher tests one-on-one. So now we are looking at approximately TWO WEEKS of true INSTRUCTIONAL TIME LOST. We will not be putting them in front of a movie or having extended playtime, but the reality is that with 35 students, instruction is not the same. FAIR TESTING IS DONE THREE TIMES A YEAR!
I KNOW I MAY BE IN BREACH OF MY CONTRACT BY NOT ADMINISTERING THIS TEST. I CANNOT IN GOOD CONSCIENCE SUBMIT TO ADMINISTERING THIS TEST THREE TIMES A YEAR, LOSING SIX WEEKS OF INSTRUCTION. THERE IS A GOOD POSSIBILITY I WILL BE FIRED.
I am heartsick over the possibility of losing my job. I love my job. There is nothing I Testing a kindergartner: How it feels as a teacher | Seattle Education:

Higher education should be gateway to future, not to financial ruin By Randi Weingarten

Higher education should be gateway to future, not to financial ruin:

Higher education should be gateway to future, not to financial ruin

Katrona Burks attends Milwaukee Area Technical College to get the education she needs for a better job. But her student loan debt is making her think twice about her decision to earn a degree because it's now rippling down to the next generation: Her college-age daughter could not get a student loan because her mother is saddled with so much debt.
It has left Burks financially soaked and frustrated. Higher education is supposed to be a gateway to the future, not an avenue to financial ruin.
Too many people are in similar positions to Burks. People are drowning in student loan debt, which is worse than credit card debt in our nation, yet it is not possible to refinance interest rates to make student loans more affordable. Students also are facing crushing tuition bills, which have risen due to reduced state funding for higher education.
Nationally, student debt is a trillion-dollar problem. Consumers Union estimates that about 40 million Americans have student loan debt, totaling $1.2 trillion. In Wisconsin, 753,000 students are saddled with student loan debt.
At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, for example, 72% of 2012 graduates have outstanding student loans, with the average debt about $32,000. It's only slightly better with 2012 UW-Madison graduates, with 49% still paying off student loans, owing an average of $24,700.
We tell high school students to set high goals, do well and go to college. But where is the commitment from Wisconsin's highest state officials?
Under the current administration, Wisconsin has seen the biggest cuts in education, in both K-12 and higher education, in the state's history. The $1.2 billion in reductions includes cuts of $792 million in direct state aid to K-12 schools, $250 million from UW System and $71 million, or 30%, from state technical colleges.
While most states increased higher education funding over the last school year, Wisconsin was one of only eight that slashed its funding, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
Here's the problem: We believe education is the key to overcoming inequity and becoming a productive member of society and the economy. Yet K-12 and higher education funding is being cut to the bone. And Wisconsin is a prime example of that.
It's particularly sad to see the technical college cuts, where there is a direct connection between education Higher education should be gateway to future, not to financial ruin:
