Van Roekel and Duncan Honor Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education

NEA President Dennis Van Roekel joined Secretary of Education Arne Duncan yesterday in Kansas for theEducation Drives America bus tour.
The first stop of the day was the Brown v. Board of Education historic site in Topeka to honor the U.S. Supreme Court case that ended legal segregation in the nation’s public schools.
“We are all responsible for keeping the promise that the Supreme Court made in this landmark case – the promise of true equity,” said Van Roekel.
Noting the National Education Association’s history of fighting for equality and equity in public education, Van Roekel said NEA members continue to ensure “there is access and equity for every child in America regardless of race, gender, social status, sexual orientation or zip code.”
From the Brown v. Board of Education historic site, Van Roekel an Duncan headed to Emporia for a tour of the National Teacher Hall of Fame and a town hall discussion with students, prospective teachers, and community members at Emporia State University.
Topics at the town hall ranged from educating students by addressing the whole child, supporting and retaining educators, and elevating the profession.
