Gladstone will end school year early, add furlough day to save money

Gladstone School District will eliminate four instructional days from the current school year in response to the governor's recent economic forecastordering a 9 percent cut to state programs.

A furlough day will be implemented on Monday, June 7, and the school year will end June 11, three school days earlier than originally scheduled, according to superintendent Bob Stewart.

Earlier this year, the Gladstone Teachers Association and the Gladstone School Board entered a memorandum of understanding to cut days from the 2009-10 school year if state funding fell below $5.8 billion. The superintendent and employees met Tuesday morning to discuss implementing the agreement.
