Barrett offers a compromise on MPS control - JSOnline:

"In an effort to reach a compromise on the contentious proposal for mayoral control of Milwaukee Public Schools, Mayor Tom Barrett said Wednesday that the elected School Board should have the power to override the mayor's school budget and appointment for superintendent.

The mayor's compromise is a last-ditch effort to rescue a mayoral control measure in the Legislature, but it appears to be dead on arrival, with two Milwaukee lawmakers opposed to the idea registering swift resistance.

State Rep. Tamara Grigsby and state Sen. Spencer Coggs - Milwaukee Democrats who have proposed giving the mayor a role in running MPS, but not the direct authority Barrett says is essential for real change in the district - called the new proposal 'window dressing.'

'It does not address the crux of the issue - that issue is who appoints the superintendent and who the superintendent reports to,' Grigsby said."
