I'm not sure if all of you have heard, but the Superintendent is presenting a draconian budget to the LAUSD Board of Trustees to vote on today. Even though the alleged budget shortfall is only 10%, Deasy (a former Gates Foundation executive and a graduate of the Broad Superintendent's academy) has crafted a budget that will eliminate education for 35% of the district's students and eliminate 100% of Elementary Arts and after-school services. Garcia and Deasy are threatening to lay off nearly 10,000 people in this round, meanwhile charters are sucking up resources and real estate.

Teachers unions, known for fighting to keep pedophiles in the classroom, try to get rid of good teachers in Seattle.

Last week, I wrote about the particularly egregious case of a teacher in Rochester, NY who sent sexually charged emails to her principal and was subsequently jailed for ignoring a restraining order. Upon her release, she returned to the classroom, and in short order was accused of fondling her middle school students. But due to her union’s pressure tactics, the school board cannot get rid of this tenured teacher.

Across the country in Seattle, we now have a situation where it would appear that the local teachers union may have success in getting six teachers removed from the district.

Pedophiles? Of course not. They are talented Teach For America teachers who have received good reviews from their principals. In what could be a new low for teachers unions – and that’s really saying

Two weeks ago, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce reported out two of Chairman John Kline’s ESEA reauthorization bills, the Student Success Act and the Encouraging Innovation and Effective Teaching Act, on a party-line vote, 23-16. Democrats, led by Ranking Member George Miller, offered just two (unsuccessful) amendments, both substitute bills. These would have required states to maintain achievement targets for student subgroups as part of accountability systems – a major issue for civil rights’ groups opposed to Kline’s bills. On the teacher side, Miller proposed that states would have a greater role in designing evaluation systems, unlike the Kline bill where districts have control.

Yesterday, on the City Hall blog, Mayor Mike Rawlings acknowledged that he's been actively involved in the search for a new Dallas Independent School District superintendent, sending to the district's search firm a list of names given to him by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Said Rawlings, "I asked him [Duncan] to make some recommendations for us to look at, since I'm not of an education background." Rawlings then handed those "four, five names" to PROACT, and one week from today, at a special meeting of the DISD board of trustees, the search firm will present its list of nine finalists. That number comes from board president Lew Blackburn (above), who insists in an interview with The Dallas Morning News that he does not know who any of the candidates are, what names Rawlings

Standardized achievement tests have long been a routine part of our efforts to measure the educational progress of students.  In the distant past, testing days came and went with little notice or fanfare for students, parents and teachers alike.  And in those days and times, the tests probably provided fairly accurate assessments of students' progress in learning from one year to the next.
But those days of relatively relaxed test-taking for students and limited stakes for school districts and teachers are long gone. Test-based accountability systems that attach weighty consequences to student test results for school district staff, teachers, students and public officials are becoming increasingly institutionalized in the education system.  There are probably few other places where the stakes attached to these tests are as high as they are in Texas.

Marvelous piece in the February Esquire: A Short Prayer for Advertising. Author Stephen Marche points out that "there is no outside the ad anymore"--even anti-advertising organizations like Adbusters are their own brand.

Everyone is part of the promotional machinery, and we are submitting to this machinery in every aspect of our existence. Advertising works: Why do you think Americans are so fat and in debt? A world of hyper-advertising in which advertising dominates the basic functions of living will obviously be a world of hyper-consumption.

Now--I get this, having taught middle school for 30 years. Teaching in a middle school is one big blur of cajoling, persuading, promoting, marketing and influencing. And it's not just about managing erratic middle school behaviors--which sometimes need a touch of "threatening," too--but core academics.

Affirmative action is a policy that does not poll well these days. Large majorities typically reject the idea that hiring or school admissions should take into account the discrimination that African Americans, women and other groups face. Most people will argue that we should have a strictly merit-based system with people evaluated on their records.

It might seem like a good idea that people stand or fall on their track record, but that doesn't seem to fit the United States today. It's certainly hard to maintain that standing in my profession of economics bears any relationship to performance. Nearly everyone in a top policymaking position today was among the group of economists who could not see the $8 trillion housing bubble that wrecked the economy when it collapsed

Economics is clearly not the only field where failure seems the best track forward. The top ranks of the so-called school reform movement are packed with people who have prospered in spite of failure.

Dear Deborah,
By now, you have seen the latest Metlife Survey of the American Teacher. It shows that teachers' satisfaction with their job has plummeted since 2009, from 59 percent to 44 percent. It is the lowest it has been in 20 years. The percentage of teachers who are likely to leave the profession has grown from 17 percent to 29 percent since 2009.
The reasons are obvious: The most satisfied teachers feel their jobs are secure, and they are treated as professionals by the community. Compared with dissatisfied teachers, they are more likely to have opportunities for professional development, time to collaborate with other teachers, and greater parental involvement in their schools. These are teachers working in an atmosphere of professionalism and collaboration.
