Agencies Can Apply For Energy Efficiency Funds

SACRAMENTO—Eligible local educational agencies (LEAs) can now apply for $65 million for planning energy efficiency projects in the second round of funding under voter-approved Proposition 39, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced today.
"Energy efficiency projects have a unique ability to save schools money even as they offer a whole host of other benefits," Torlakson said. "Work to make our schools more energy efficient also protects our environment and helps create teachable moments for students along with good jobs for their families."
The first round of funding—totaling approximately $106 million—went to LEAs last November to begin assessing needs and planning projects. This second round is for LEAs that haven't received their full planning balances.
Voters passed the California Clean Energy Jobs Act (Proposition 39) in November 2012. It allocates revenue to LEAs to support energy efficiency and alternative energy projects, along with related improvements and repairs that contribute to reduced operating costs and improved health and safety conditions in public schools.
Proposition 39 will direct about $2.5 billion in new revenues over five years to fund projects proposed by California's K-12 public schools, including charter schools; county offices of education; and community colleges. Specific requirements for how the funds will be allocated and spent may be found on the California Energy Commission  Web site. Future years' funding will go toward the projects themselves, and first-year awards that were not used for planning can also go toward projects.
