Political group wants charter schools out of segregation case
A pro-charter schools political action group filed an amicus brief Tuesday asking a federal judge to leave charter schools out of an ongoing racial segregation case against Metro Nashville Public Schools.
The brief, filed the same day that the Metro School Board approved two new charters — KIPP Academy and Purpose Prep — says that because charter schools are separate and independent entities apart from Metro Schools, they should not be included in any decision rendered in the ongoing case of Spurlock vs. Fox, which went to bench trial last month.
The federal case, filed three years ago by Jeffrey and Frances Spurlock, focuses on Metro’s 2009 rezoning plan, which sent their daughter to John Early Middle, closer to their home, instead of Bellevue Middle.
