Meeting to discuss race and school discipline
Brenda Joyce-Newman will present "Zero Tolerance," a discussion of the "racialization of discipline," at the next meeting of the Black Parallel School Board at 10 a.m. July 9.
Joyce-Newman will present her study of one Northern California school district. Discipline was meted out disproportionately to African American students at the district, she said.
Newman, who wrote this paper for her master's thesis at California State University, Sacramento, is not naming the district.
The meeting will be held at the Oak Park United Methodist Church, 3600 Broadway.
The Black Parallel School Board is a community organization that was started in order to work parallel with the Sacramento City Unified School District board to support the achievement of African American students.
