Whittier protestors meet with Brizard, insist library be in field house
Community activists staging a sit-in at Whittier Elementary School got a private meeting with new Chicago schools chief Jean-Claude Brizard Monday.
The activists who held a 36-day sit-in last fall to prevent demolition of a field house on school grounds spent much of last week occupying the field house to prevent construction crews from building a library inside the school. The group, which includes parents of Whittier students and neighborhood activists, has called for a library at Whittier but they want it built in the field house, not the main school building.
On Monday they asked CPS to give them a letter detailing the district's plans for special education students and how the district would make the library accessible to all students, including those who use wheelchairs.
