Gainful Employment Hysteria

Many in the higher education community have spent the past weeks with bated breath, knowing that any day the U.S. Department of Education is going to release its rules on gainful employment. These regulations (large PDF of the proposed changes) are expected to introduce a new system that would cap the amount of federal loans students take out to attend a strictly vocational program, such as cosmetology, court reporting, etc. The idea is to protect students from programs that prepare students for professions with relatively low expected incomes that would be unable to support an overly large debt burden.
