FCUSD School Board Members Meet With Legislators, Share Devastating Consequences of School Funding Cuts

Just days after the California School Boards Association filed a historic school finance lawsuit against the State, Teresa Stanley and Richard Shaw, board members of the Folsom Cordova Unified School District met with state lawmakers to describe the effects California’s broken education finance system has on students and asked legislators to protect schools and students from further cuts.
As part of the California School Boards Association’s 2010 Legislative Action Conference in Sacramento, Teresa Stanley, met with Senators Cox and Steinberg, and Assembly members Niello and Jones on Monday, May 24 and expressed deep concern about the devastating consequences of education cuts on schools and students.
Seventeen billion dollars in cuts to California’s education system over the past two years have forced local schools to eliminate libraries, transportation, summer school, athletics, counselors, technology, adult education, advanced courses, newcomer’s classes, vocational education, and other options essential for the success of our students. As a result, these unprecedented cuts are changing the face of education for an entire generation of schoolchildren.
The Folsom Cordova Unified School District has been forced to reduce its budget by $27.1 million over the past two years. Class sizes have increased, while students’ educational choices have substantially decreased.
