Students and teachers mobilized Thursday for an education protest at the state Capitol in Sacramento, while some violence was reported at University of California, Santa Cruz.
Protesters are upset over budget cuts that have led to canceled classes, faculty furloughs and steep fee hikes. The protest, which is part of the Day of Action, comes at a time when the state is facing a $20 billion deficit.Demonstrations, marches, teach-ins and walkouts were planned at many campuses. Regional rallies were scheduled in civic plazas in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and other cities.David Kliger, campus provost at UC Santa Cruz, sent a message to the campus community warning of reports of protesters carrying clubs and knives. He said it also appears that someone smashed a car windshield with a metal pipe."Behavior that degrades into violence, personal intimidation, and disrespect for the rights of others is reprehensible, and does nothing to aid efforts to restore funding to the university," Kliger wrote.Meanwhile, some students gathered at 5 a.m. at Sacramento State to make signs for the Capitol rally, which was set to get going at about 11 a.m.
