SACRAMENTO, Calif. --
KCRA 3 obtained pictures from a viewer of the dumpsters at Alice Birney Elementary School. The dumpsters were filled with items such as a chalk board, unused paper towels and toilet paper, paper towel dispensers, soap dispensers, books, crayons, markers and electronics.The superintendent of the Sacramento Unified School District apologized Wednesday night after a KCRA 3 investigation exposed one school throwing away usable materials in the middle of a budget crisis.
"I'm sorry that that's had to happen. There's no excuse for, you know, even a box of crayons being disposed at anytime, you know, irrespective of the fiscal situation," said Superintendent Jonathan Raymond.
The district is in the middle of preparing the entire campus for a Waldorf school to move this fall, and Raymond said someone made a mistake during that process.
Judy Mansfield, the viewer who sent KCRA 3 the photos, said she saw the dumpsters filled with useful items on at least three separate occasions.
"What was upsetting was the sheer waste. I recognize that it, it might be a drop in the bucket in terms of addressing the budget deficit, but we are all doing little things," Mansfield said.
"We can not afford to have that happen," said board member Roy Grimes.
