SACRAMENTO, CA - Some of the money in the California lottery goes toward education.
For every dollar spent, $0.34 goes to public education ranging from kindergarten to local colleges. The rest of the money pays for operating expenses, commissions and prizes.
Since the lottery began in 1984, more than $20 billion has gone to education. While that sound like a hefty number, the 2009 contribution of $1 billion amounted to just 1.5 percent of the overall education budget.
