How a teacher turned a ‘B’ track class into honors

A teacher named Mrs. Eli changed Angela Valenzuela’s life by insisting on treating members of a lower-tracked 11th grade class of Mexican Americans as honors students. Now Valenzuela is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and a leading voice on the needs of English Language Learners.

Her story about Mrs. Eli below is the latest installment in a series on The Sheet called “Faces of Learning,” a national campaign designed to explore what powerful learning environments and highly effective teachers really look like.

43 education programs Republicans want to eliminate

Forty-three education programs — including those that promote literacy, teacher development and droppout prevention — have been targeted for elimination in a Republican-sponsored bill in the House as a first step toward rewriting the law known as No Child Left Behind.

The bill was introduced by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-CA., chairman of the subcommitee that oversees preK-12 policy, and praised by Rep. John Kline, R-MN, chairman of the House Education & The Workforce Committee, but criticized by the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. George Miller of California, who said it would do nothing to improve public education.

Shake Your Boutique

Is it possible that Cerf and Christie are starting to figure out that their "cure" for New Jersey's already excellent suburban public schools is something their base really doesn't need or want?
In Livingston, critics of the special-interest charter applications contend the schools will drain money away from the traditional public schools and lead to segregation. The debate is being heard everywhere, from the school playground to dozens of opinions being offered on Patch and other media sites.
In his softening stance toward suburban charters, Cerf said, “I can certainly see, particularly in successful school districts, particularly in smaller suburban ones that are

My dear friends and neighbors, please join me and Jackie Goldberg and vote for Bennett Kayser in TUESDAY's election
Neighbors and friends,

As you all know I have been recently very active in our Local schools. Throughout the last 8 months I have been able to meet Bennet Kayser, and he he has so impressed me with his passion for education, his love for our neighborhood and his guts to take on Luis Sanchez and the HUGE political machine that has built and support him. I don't want to get into the negatives about Luis Sanchez, but I personally have been very upset and offended by

D.C. Charters Exclude Disabled

From the Washington Post

The District’s public charter schools discriminate against students with disabilities — especially those with significant needs — in their admissions policies and often steer them instead to expensive private schools, special education advocates contend in a complaint filed Thursday with the Justice Department.

This test will determine your personal worth, that of your school, and that of your community. But, not to worry, summer break is on its way, so that means the end of standardized-test-season! To celebrate the auspicious occasion, please enjoy another test. We can not promise any valuable learning, other than bubble-dot skills, which you may or may not need for any future jobs. But do it anyway, because your local, state, and federal governments mandate this ritual, no matter what you, or we, have to say about it.

Fill in the blank to select the most appropriate answer in the following question.

1. If you are stranded in the wilderness, you will most likely require ______________:

Subject: Teacher Needs Help

It pains me to watch the virulent attacks on public employees like me. Primary targets are the pension systems that support police, firefighters, nurses and teachers in their retirement. In Illinois, this debate now endangers my own family. Please consider the following:

  • Public sector employees are not covered by Social Security. Nor are we covered by employer 401K programs. The individuals who choose to serve our communities rely on public pensions for retirement security.
  • I have never missed a payment on my pension plan. 9.4 percent of my salary is removed from my paycheck by the Illinois Teacher Retirement System. I have no matching dollars to boost my retirement savings. I have no discretion in the investment of my retirement savings. I follow the law and expect my state to do the same.
  • The Illinois crisis, like those in other states, has resulted from the fiscal mismanagement of public dollars. Over the past 20 years, the Illinois legislature has not honored its pension obligations. Those obligations total less

Andy Tightens the Screws

May 16, 2011 (GBN News): Emboldened by the NY State Board of Regents’ approval of a strict new teacher evaluation system, Governor Andrew Cuomo has decided to tighten the screws even further. In his second letter to Chancellor Meryl Tisch in as many days, the Governor thanked the Regents for their vote, but “strongly suggested” that they now consider upgrading to an even more draconian set of sanctions.

According to the letter, leaked to GBN News, firing teachers whose test scores do not measure up will be only the first step. If, after losing their jobs, their

Dr. Paul Buckley and my brother, Ralf Balbi

I remember the first time I spoke to Ralf about what his college experience would be like, and I had a list of people I told him to seek out on the Syracuse University campus. Names like Anthony Otero, Angela Morales-Patterson, Dr. James K. Duah-Agyeman, and Max Patino ring true for thousands of students on campus directly or indirectly through their work on campus for others.

Yet, this weekend was particularly special because not only was my younger brother Ralf graduating from my alma mater, but my early mentor Paul Buckley was graduating from his doctoral program. A man whose own life demands the same discipline and excellence he expects from students who cross his path, he spent hours upon

You’re Taking Care of Others, But Who’s Taking Care of You?!

MOTHERS changing the conversation @ www.MothersOughtToHaveEqualRights.org

Lara Hinz, my friend, colleague and Director of Programs at the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement(WISER) has penned this guest post. She raises a very important point – while we have our hands full taking care of others, our own future well-being is likely falling by the wayside. WISER aims to change that and Lara has some pointers for you.

Caregiving is a common theme in many women’s lives. As young girls and teenagers we may have helped take care of grandma, or perhaps we were babysitters for our younger siblings or other kids in the neighborhood. Many women become mothers, and then eventually, as family members age, the caregiving role for all women often expands to include parents, grandparents and older relatives. And like it or not, it is still typically women who shoulder the load of these caregiving responsibilities.

When it comes to caring for someone, women often put themselves at the bottom of that list. It is hard to juggle it all, but it is important for women to realize that this comes at a cost. Even beyond their experience as caregivers, women’s needs differ greatly from men at most stages of their lives. This is especially true when it comes to finances. Women on average earn less, spend more years out of the labor market, and live longer than men. While many women are involved in their family’s day-to-day finances, far fewer are engaged in the long-term

School Tech Connect: The Anomaly

The Anomaly

I was berating the poor Justin Hamilton this afternoon, which by the way is an awesome new hobby, very popular, when I felt myself becoming enormously frustrated with Arne Duncan. Again.

The thing that has always stuck in my craw about Arne Duncan is that, in spite of his being the nicest guy in the world---- he's also a complete anomaly in the Obama Cabinet.

Every other cabinet officer is either an expert in the field or a person who has won elections--- a person who's had to go before the voters and advocate positions and have those positions ratified by the electorate. The reason presidents pick cabinet secretaries who are established national leaders is that the president needs to draw on the well of good will that these men and women have established around the nation in the courses of their own public careers. Not to mention the fact that these people tend to have an ounce of sense about how to

Hamas — controversial.

Hummus? Not so much.

Unless it’s the Sabra brand of the popular mashed chickpea dip.

As DePaul University students vote this week in the annual officer elections, they’ll also be asked whether they want a replacement hummus brand served on campus.

Last year, students at Princeton University voted down a similar effort calling for the student government to ask campus cafeteria services to offer an alternative to Sabra, according to the New York Times.

Students for Justice in Palestine are behind the DePaul referendum. They say Sabra’s parent company, the Strauss group, sends financial support to two Israeli military units accused of h
