The Answer Sheet - Bedbugs at school: The new lice but worse

Bedbugs at school: The new lice but worse

Public schools are facing something of a plague, and, for once, I do not mean standardized tests. Rather, bedbugs. Schools in a number of states have closed off classrooms -- or the entire building -- because of bedbugs this school year, and Michigan government officials issued a document telling schools how to handle any infestations, complete with a template of a parent notification letter (“Dear Parent or Guardian: We recently found a bed bug in your child’s classroom....”). In New York City, the number of confirmed bedbug cases in the first five months of the school is on pace to triple last year’s total. City schools have so far reported 1,7000 cases this academic year, the city’s Department of Education reported.

Teacher-Librarians Are the Knowledge Brokers of a School

I'm reading the article "Teaching the iGeneration," in the the February 2011 issue of Educational Leadership, and was stunned to see that Mr. Rosen missed such a critical resource. He talks about knowledge brokers, people who can help teachers sort out the information riches available online, and suggested students or parents.

But teacher-librarians are the knowledge brokers of a school. We manage and share information all day long. It's our area of expertise! It's our job! We can also help teachers learn to use the technologies of the iGeneration, set up online

UNCERTIFIED TEACHERS MAY BRING FEDERAL SANCTIONS AGAINST LYNWOOD UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

LYNWOOD — The Lynwood Unified School District is being sanctioned by the federal government for not being compliant with the No Child Left Behind Law after the district’s new director of human resources reported that a handful of teachers here have not been fully credentialed for more than eight years.

Due to recent demographic changes affecting California, public schools required a reconsideration of the basic preparation for new teachers, and the specialized upgrade preparation for all teachers who instruct students whose first language is not English.

Since 2002 in California, teachers have been required to have more than just a credential from the state of California’s Commission on Teacher

Rhee faces renewed scrutiny over depiction of students' progress when she taught

Former D.C. schools chancellor Michelle A. Rhee, known for her crusade to use standardized test scores to help evaluate teachers, is facing renewed scrutiny over her depiction of progress that her students made years ago when she was a schoolteacher.

THIS STORY

A former D.C. math teacher, Guy Brandenburg, posted on his blog a study that includes test scores from the Baltimore school where Rhee

Watch out, businesses, if taxes lose in June - by John Fensterwald - Educated Guess

Business leaders on the fence on whether to push Republicans to join Democrats in putting tax extensions on the June ballot should consider what might happen if the measures fail. Democratic Sen. Joe Simitian is telling them they’ll probably face voter-led tax initiatives in November they’ll find far less palatable – an oil severance tax [...]

The Answer Sheet - Why our metrics for quality are not objective

The Answer Sheet - Why our metrics for quality are not objective

Why our metrics for quality are not objective

This was written by Larry Cuban, a former high school social studies teacher (14 years, including seven at Cardozo and Roosevelt high schools in the District), district superintendent (seven years in Arlington, VA) and professor emeritus of education at Stanford University, where he has taught for 20 years. His latest book is "As Good As It Gets: What School Reform Brought to Austin." This appeared on his blog. By Larry Cuban Choosing the right metric to measure a medical therapy or school effectiveness is not a fact-filled, objective decision. It is subjective and packed with trade-offs. Consider the metrics used since 1971 when president Richard Nixon signed legislation declaring a "War on Cancer.*" In 1985, one researcher used the measure of how many lives were saved with chemotherapy and exams that detected the onset of cancer. He used the national cancer registry to determine how many Americans were diagnosed

Speaking of the Urban League

Will anyone at the Urban League event tonight mention the Urban League's position on NCLB and Race to the Top? I'll review it for you here:

And there's a pretty good summary at Substance News. Let's look at some of the quotes from the report.

Will writing get me in trouble?

My students were hard at work outlining the first essays for their self-published magazines. They were writing about cars, gymnastics, football, teen fashion, traveling, music, cooking, skateboarding and whatever else grabbed their fancy. This project would carry them through the rest of the semester, and because they get to choose the topics for their magazines, they usually enjoy the work. Writing is an art, and the more freedom and power I can give my students, the better. Every year, though, there are a few students who struggle to find a topic for their magazine.

Jessi is one of them. A shy student who barely completes most assignments, Jessi appears uninterested in most of the work we do. When I try to talk with her one on one, she swings her black, stringy hair in front of her

Dear Mr. Velderman:

I Just read this disconcerting blog post from a public school art teacher whom I respect and admire immensely.

In fact I have already investigated his work and I can provide some useful inside information.

I filmed in his classroom as he taught 3rd graders how they can use art to imagine and draw the future
of their community. The kids had wonderful ideas and expressed them beautifully under Mr. Klonsky’s thoughtful direction. It was one of the best experiences I have had as a documentary filmmaker in a public school setting.

Gonsalvez, Unfinished Puzzle

A few weeks ago, I learned something about the year I’ve had so far, and it unnerved me in a way I didn’t expect. As most of you know, I celebrated another glorious birthday on this Earth on January 24th. I spent time in the company of family and friends through the weekend. IHOP, rum and coke mixes, and heavy doses of well wishes from around the world more than sufficed for that great day. Yet, something was missing, and I couldn’t pinpoint it until about 5pm on the A train home.

My current students barely acknowledged my birthday.

For the past 5 years, I had been so spoiled by the various classes I had, and the kinship I built with each of
