President Geeting:
Thank you for catching that error in my letter of April 2 about the Fortune School location. I meant to say that SCOE approved the re-zoning of the location without input from the public in Elk Grove. You are correct in stating that the Aspire case dealt with a statewide benefit charter--I did mention that in my letter. I wrote that the situations with Aspire and the Fortune school charter were analogous.
However, I didn't quote you in my letter. I paraphrased a statement from your report on the Fortune school board meeting made to the SCOE board, which is in the minutes of the March 5, 2013 SCOE board meeting:
Also, the {Fortune} board discussed the inability to access start-up grants for its new schools here in Sacramento. Ultimately, the board decided to accept the recommendation of State Superintendent Tom Torlakson and petition the County Board for individual countywide charters for each school, given that each school draws from multiple districts.
Again, I ask the SCOE board not to approve the material revision of the Fortune charter to locate outside their identified "children's zone", since to do so would go against the charter's stated mission and purpose for existing. I reiterate our position is that the Fortune School should make any future petition for a charter to the Elk Grove USD Board of Education or to the board of the district in which they choose to locate a school.
Thank you,
Kate Lenox, Secretary
