LAUSD; HOW CRENSHAW STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND TEACHERS CAN FINALLY SUCCEED

There was a meeting last week at the Radical Women center for the Crenshaw Cougar Coalition to discuss how to address the attack on Crenshaw High School by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and its proposed reconstitution of the school. Although Beatriz Paez, who chaired the meeting, said they were interested in formulating a plan to address the proposed reconstitution, along with magnets, and ultimate privatization/charterization of Crenshaw. When all was said and done by the end of the meeting, it was clear that those running the meeting did not have a clue how to proceed. And even though they said they were interested in hearing about viable elements of such a plan, the reality of this meeting showed a complete unwillingness to develop a more pragmatic approach where the community would take responsibility for Crenshaw based on framing the students, parents, and teachers vision of what an excellent public education would look like at Crenshaw. While the Crenshaw High School community might not presently have such a clear and concise vision, the networking necessary to achieve it is well within their grasp, if they deign to reach out from this long segregated community.

Even though the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) completely ignores
