Nominee to State Board of Education Executive Director Post
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today congratulated Karen Stapf Walters on her nomination by Governor Jerry Brown to the position of Executive Director of the California State Board of Education:
"It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Karen Stapf Walters on her nomination to direct the Board of Education," Torlakson said. "For many years, she has been a leading voice in education in California, and I look forward to working with her in this new role."

Karen Stapf Walters – Interim Executive Director
In May 2012 Karen Stapf Walters became interim executive director of the Association of California School Administrators, where she has led the governmental relations team since 1999. She now additionally manages the day-to-day operations of the 14,500-member association, along with assistant executive directors for educational services, communications, financial operations and member services.
Karen has overseen ACSA’s political action committees and candidate endorsement process. For two decades she has worked at the state level on kindergarten through adult education policy issues. In governmental relations for ACSA, she oversees state and federal programs and manages a team of lobbyists who advocate before the Legislature and state agencies as well as Congress on public policy issues of importance to ACSA members.
Prior to joining ACSA, Karen was a middle and high school social studies and history teacher for more than a decade. She also served as a committee consultant in the California State Senate and as a legislative aide with expertise in education issues.
She has been delivering the message throughout the state that ACSA’s mission in support of students, school leaders and California’s public schools remains strong.
