Charter school reformers seek democratic control

CENTRAL JERSEY — As legislation is drafted and redrafted in the state Senate, proposed charter schools in Hillsborough, Flemington, Highland Park, South Brunswick and Plainfield await the impact of four bills passed in the Assembly last week.

The bills would reform the state’s 15-year-old Charter School Law by:

Requiring local approval for establishment of new charter schools;

Ensuring charter schools have financial, educational and demographic transparency and accountability;

Allowing private and parochial schools to be transformed into charters, as long as they don’t promote religious views;
