National Teachers Hall of Fame: Preserving the Story of Teachers

Every June, crowds gather for a three-day event in Emporia, Kansas to honor five outstanding teachers from across the nation who are inducted into The National Teachers Hall of Fame (NTHF). The 2011 inductees arrived in Emporia last Wednesday, and were VIP guests of a citywide outdoor concert. The music was followed by a screening of “Stand and Deliver,” the true story of math teacher Jaime Escalante, a 1999 NTHF inductee known for his achievement with Latino students in Los Angeles.
At Friday’s induction ceremony on the campus of Emporia State University (ESU), NEA Executive Committee Member Christy Levings presented NTHF with a check for $25,000.
“People across the nation need to know about the National Teachers Hall of Fame,” Levings said. “It is for NEA to help shine a spotlight on the work they are doing, nurturing teachers.”
The NTHF was founded in 1989 by ESU, the ESU Alumni Association, the City of Emporia, and the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce. The organization is dedicated to preserving the history of education in the
