Hi Ya! Karate and Autistic Kids

Thanks to Autism Key for the vid. I love the woman’s comment about wanting to expose her child to something other than therapy. Ditto. “We want to feel normal,” she says. Ditto on that too. Our autistic boy has been taking karate lessons for a while now, but for me the biggest benefit hasn’t been better balance or social skills. What it has shown me week after week is how hard my boy tries. Also these valuable lessons from his sensei, a great guy who makes learning fun: 1. if you show your head your opponent will hit it and 2. the best defense is striking back, then running for help. PS Check out the incredible photo that accompanies this article on a Wisconsin study that explores the benefits of karate for autistic kids.
