Race key issue in charter schools' discussion

A petition for a charter school system aimed at improving the academic achievement of African American students in Sacramento County drew hundreds of supporters and opponents to a lengthy meeting Tuesday.
By late Tuesday, Sacramento County Office of Education trustees had not voted on whether to approve Margaret Fortune's proposal for 10 charter schools located throughout area school districts.
Dozens of supporters, many of them wearing orange Fortune School shirts, said something needs to be done about the achievement gap between African American students and their white counterparts.
"The time is now," several speakers said.
