ASSISTANT SECRETARY POSNY TO ADDRESS D.C. CONFERENCE ON DISABILITY EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Assistant Secretary Alexa Posny, who heads the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services at the U.S. Department of Education, will deliver remarks at a conference sponsored by the Family Support Center on Disabilities Wednesday in Washington. Dr. Posny will discuss the importance of educational opportunity and success and its role in future employment opportunity, as well as reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act.

SECRETARY OF EDUCATION WILL HIGHLIGHT SUPPORT FOR JOBS BILL IN NYC SCHOOL VISITS WITH CHANCELLOR JOEL KLEIN AND MAYOR MICHAEL BLOOMBERG

Today, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan travels to New York City where he will visit three Brooklyn schools with Chancellor Joel Klein and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. This afternoon, Secretary Duncan will visit Kings Collegiate Charter School, a successful charter school run by the Uncommon Schools charter network. During his visit, Secretary Duncan will stop by a seventh grade math class with Principal Lauren Harris. From there, Secretary Duncan, Chancellor Klein and Mayor Bloomberg will be joined by Mike Casserly, executive director of the Council of the Great City Schools, for a visit to P.S. 214. While there, Secretary Duncan will learn about P.S. 214’s extended day, Saturday Academy, and dual English-Spanish language kindergarten class. A press avail will be held at the end of the visit, from 2:00-2:30 p.m. At the end of the day, Secretary Duncan will head to P.S. 65, a traditional school turned around under the leadership of Principal Daysi Garcia. During Principal Garcia’s brief tenure, student performance on state assessments have dramatically improved in both math and language arts.
During today’s trip to New York, Secretary Duncan will highlight the importance of securing $23 billion in emergency funds to preserve education jobs, along with $1 billion to preserve early childhood education jobs. Last week, Secretary Duncan and Director of Domestic Policy Council Melody Barnes voiced support for emergency funds. ASSISTANT SECRETARY TO DISCUSS ESEA REAUTHORIZATION AT TEXAS SCHOOL ALLIANCE MEETING

U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana will discuss reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) at a meeting of the Texas School Alliance on Wednesday, May 19, at the Doubletree Guest Suites in Austin. Approximately 60 superintendents and their representatives will attend. The Texas School Alliance, founded in 1990, represents 34 of the state’s larger, diverse school districts. These districts work together to provide a positive and significant impact on public education in Texas.

U.S. EDUCATION SECRETARY TO VISIT BOSTON: DELIVER COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS, HOLD JOBS DISCUSSION, HONOR TOP BOSTON EDUCATORS

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Boston Wednesday, delivering the commencement address for Lesley University, touring an elementary school, holding a roundtable discussion on saving education jobs in Massachusetts, recognizing community partnerships at another elementary school and honoring Boston Educators of the Year.
Duncan will begin his day at 10:30 a.m. by addressing Lesley's Centennial Commencement at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. At noon, he will travel to Beachmont Elementary in Revere where he will tour classes and host a roundtable discussion on saving education jobs in Massachusetts. Among the participants will be Massachusetts Education Secretary Paul Reville, union leaders, Revere School Superintendent Paul Dakin and teachers.
At 1:25 p.m., Duncan will visit Josiah Quincy Elementary in Boston along with Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Superintendent Carol R. Johnson. There, Duncan will pay tribute to Boston Educators of the Year as part of a discussion with them about effective strategies for academic success. Second- and third-grade students will perform a dance routine for Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. And, the secretary will commend special school-community partnerships in place at the school.
