Virtual charter schools lag far behind

The number of students in virtual schools run by educational management organizations rose sharply last year, but the students in those schools are lagging far behind their peers in in traditional public schools. This according to a new study by the National Education Policy Center.

About 27 percent of these schools achieved “adequate yearly progress,” the key federal standard set forth under the No Child Left Behind act to measure academic progress. By comparison, nearly 52 percent of all privately managed brick-and-mortar schools reached that goal, a figure comparable to all public schools nationally.

Yesterday, I wrote a post (see “The message is to fire people sooner rather than later”) commenting on the big (non peer reviewed) study featured in The New York Times about the long-term impact on students of having “high value added” teachers.

One of the researchers was interviewed on the PBS News Hour last night, and a comment seems to me to point out a huge blind spot in the study. He said:

It's another Saturday morning. I could write about a very good column by Charles Blow, The G.O.P.’s ‘Black People’ Platform, but although I find it highly worth sharing do not feel drawn to engage with it sufficiently: my mind recognizes its cogency but it does not connect with my heart.

I also need to finish and post my review of the latest book by Thomas Franks, Pity the Billionare: The Hard-Times Swindle and the Unlikely Comeback of the Right - it is now officially released and other reviews are becoming available. Yet it too does not at this moment engage my inner being, even as I recognize it as an important analysis, one of which people here should be aware.

Perhaps it is because it is Saturday morning, a time when it is normal for me to take time to reflect with more than mind.

My thoughts today are personal - they are my thoughts. They are also political, or if you prefer, derived my sense of civic responsibility.

Let me be clear: The students who enter and remain in IDEA Charter Schools perform quite well at the secondary level. At the elementary level, performance is above average in reading and slightly below average in math. They send most or all of the students graduating from the high schools to some form of post-secondary education. They should be commended for that. Michelle Rhee of StudentsFirst is coming to Missouri, as a lobbyist for education reform, and she is doing so at the request of the Missouri legislature. Rhee, a prominent proponent of charter schools, announced on the StudentsFirst website:

StudentsFirst members across the state and bipartisan leaders in the General Assembly have asked us to join their effort to enact essential education reforms in Missouri.

In a story published in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Scott Dieckhaus, a republican from Washington and House Chairman of the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee spoke to StudentsFirst leaders about coming to Missouri in the fall of 2012. Dieckhaus is quoted in the article:

As California moves toward an earlier cutoff age for kindergarten, Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed axing funds for a transitional program aimed at children newly shut out of those classrooms.

In his latest budget, the Democratic governor proposed a permanent elimination of funds for transitional kindergarten, a new program designed to serve children not yet ready for regular kindergarten. It would save $223.7 million in 2012-13 and $672 million at full implementation in 2014-15.

I know it makes a lot of teachers nervous/sick-to-the-stomach, but I absolutely LOVE communicating with students through Facebook. Yes, I Facebook with students. In fact, I accept every request they send my way, because it is an incredible way to take seriously what I believe about relationships and learning.

I bring it up, because I had a fantastic exchange with an Algebra 2 student yesterday, and it couldn’t have happened if I refused or was prohibited from using Facebook with my students.
