      Yesterday I had the opportunity to have a great discussion with one of the teachers at my school. We started this conversation during his conference period, and the discussion continued for about an hour after school ended.

      Our discussion covered several different topics that are typically considered to be the “sacred cows” of educational discussions. Throughout this conversation we both brought up many good points, and the conversation definitely caused me to reflect and think about my educational beliefs and the way I approach my job as an Educator.

      Schools are institutions of so much possibility, a place for developing young minds for better or for worse. During my interview with Marquett , http://wp.me/p1IwKs-1s he spoke a great deal about the way many charter schools in low-income communities of color have taken the stance of isolation. Many of them attempt to create an island of their own, acting as a fortress in the community. Taking such a stance speaks a hidden language to students and community members that articulates the following:

      1. Your community isn’t good enough. Yes we are preparing you to be scholars and we want you to be college bound however, you must leave your community behind. If you do not separate yourself from your community, you will be failures just like the rest of them.

      2. Your community is a deficit. Why would our school be a part of it? It has no assets to give. Our institution has the knowledge and the power. Nothing of value can be discovered outside of it.

      3. Your community does not understand: Most of its members are uneducated and impoverished anyway. They will resent academic advancement along with the institution that provides it.

      I am ashamed to write this. Not I am ashamed, ” but secretly I am grinning maliciously inside”, ashamed, I am really ashamed that I behaved in this manner a long, long, time, ago. But its part of my story, so I will share it.

      Back in the 80′s, we had a teacher in our school who was always smiling. She smiled morning, noon, and night, and she got on my last nerves! I always wondered why she was so cheerful, didn’t she realize how annoying she was? Didn’t she realize that people had problems? So, to put an end to her everlasting cheerfulness, a colleague and I decided we were going to “get her.” We were in the grade below her, and we decided we were going to put the worst kids in her class, and force her to stop being so cheerful. Well, our plan didn’t work, she still smiled, and she continued to annoy me until she moved out of the

      It has been almost three weeks since Monmouth University/NJ Press Media put out the poll on "Education Reform." The response to the poll, particularly the use of the headline "New Jersey Supports Education Reforms: Public Likes Merit Pay, Limited Tenure, Vouchers, Charter Schools." in the press release has been decidedly negative from those in the education community who have seen it and those who study the issue. No one has even, to this moment, offered a detailed defense of the poll. The headline was an unfortunate way to frame the poll for two reasons:

      1. It misleads policymakers and media that "education reform" has broad support.
      2. The poll itself proved that headline to be false.

      Ron Clark, the acclaimed teacher and author, wrote a CNN commentary this week titled What teachers really want to tell parents.

      I hope any teacher reading it ends up following the opposite of some of the advice he gives:

      And if you really want to help your children be successful, stop making excuses for them. I was talking with a parent and her son about his summer reading assignments. He told me he hadn’t started, and I let him know I was extremely disappointed because school starts in two weeks. His mother chimed in and told me that it had been a horrible summer for them because of family issues they’d been through in July. I said I was so sorry, but I couldn’t help but point out that the assignments were given in May.

      Now, that’s the way to model empathy….
