Who will stand up for Public Education in this election?

Romney lands the first punch. Will Dems strike back? If not, who will?

In the run-up to the elections, neither candidate(s) has said much about education issues. As for party platforms, neither party has a real education plank. The Republicans have been playing only two notes -- bust the teacher unions and don't tax the rich. The Democrats have been playing none. They have been tight-roping between the teacher unions and the influential hedge-fund "reformers" like Democrats For Educational Reform (DFER) and have seemingly decided to play it safe and go without an education plank. Neither party dares to utter the wordsNo Child Left Behind or Race To The Top which are both vote killers for any candidate.

But today it was a clever Mitt Romney who fired the first salvo across the bow of the reticent Dems. Speaking before a friendly crowd at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Romney co-opted much of the Democrats ed "reform" initiative, launched a broadside against the unions, etch-a-sketched on his former support for NCLB, and called for a national system of school

U.S. TO GIVE $400 MILLION FOR IDEAS ABOUT “PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION”, I’LL GIVE THEM ONE FOR FREE

Seeking to spur a bold rethinking of the classroom, the Obama administration on Tuesday proposed divvying up $400 million among local school districts that devise ways of reaching children, especially from poor and rural families.
The competition will reward districts that move away from the model of a teacher standing at the front of a classroom and come up with a way to personalize education so children advance at their own pace, the rules state.
I will give them a tried and true method for free, (just willing to do my best to reduce the massive government deficit), I don’t need any money incentive.  I will propose an idea that was sweeping educational circles when I began teaching 40 years ago. It was called, “Individualized Instruction”. It was all the rage! Hundreds of studies were done to show its benefits and every school district was going to switch to this revolutionary idea in education. There was only one problem, study after study showed that in order to effectively implement

1. Jolt pooh-poohed the charter schools initiativeTuesday—it seems a bit late in the game to just be getting your signature gathering effort underway for the July 6 deadline (they'll need 241,000 valid signatures).
But a source tells Fizz that the campaign already believes it has $7 million in commitments toward supporting their cause, including $4 million from the Gates Foundation and $1 million from Nick Hanauer, the local investor, big Democratic donor, and ed reform advocate who caused a flap earlier this yearby bad mouthing Jay Inslee over education issues.
Speaking of Jay Inslee, if the charter initiative does go forward, watch for the anti-charters Washington Education Association, the teachers' union, to match the charter camp in spending, which will drain a traditional source of money away from the Democrats in the governor's race.

I think this assessment is true but that's what happens when people in political parties split over a single issue.

I wonder if people will have a reaction to that kind of money being spent on an education measure (either way).

There is some definite tweaking which I will have to ponder for possible

The Romney Education Agenda

What would education policy look like in a Mitt Romney administration?

As the saying goes, people are policy. Romney’s list of campaign advisers was released this week and it is a re-run of the George W. Bush administration.

There is Rod Paige, Nina Rees, Bill Hansen, Russ Whitehurst, Bill Evers, Carol D’Amico, and possibly others who were high-level Bush II appointees. Margaret Spellings has also advised Romney but is not on this task force. There are representatives of big corporations, and there is a state superintendent (Tom Luna of Idaho) known for his love of online learning (and getting campaign contributions from providers of same). There are also conservative policy academics, such as Paul Peterson, Herbert Walberg, Robert Costrell, and John Chubb.
There was a time when I would have been on the same side with these like-minded folks. But I am no longer like-minded. What I can bring to the table, however, is that I know their policies and ideas well because I once shared them.

Their core beliefs are school choice, testing and accountability. These were the hallmarks of No Child Left Behind, as they are now the foundation for Race to the Top. So a new Romney administration would seek to advance vouchers, charters, online learning, and test-based accountability. But because Republicans don’t like

Many have noted extensively how they no longer seem to care that they are forbidden by law from developing national standards. Duncan and his representatives have repeatedly stated that they are not doing that. Rather, it is state consortia (which DOEd incentivized the creation of through the first RTTT) who are developing standards (which they require states to adopt to receive second round awards in RTTT).  But it is this latest round of RTTT that is by far the biggest power grab by a federal department who was originally only designed to be a clearing house for education information. In it, DOEd seems to have perfected the technique of loophole optimization by

Decline to Sign: The charter school initiative

A charter school initiative was submitted by the League of Education Voters yesterday and will require 250,000 signatures by July 8, 2012 to be on the ballot in November.

Charter Schools Initiative Introduced Today, First Analysis

A charter school initiative introduced today will be on the November ballot, if supporters are able to gather 250,000 signatures by July 6th.  I did a quick read through today, to see how it compared to the very problematic bill introduced in the last legislative session.

What can the failures of desegregation teach us?

In a New York Times editorial over the weekend, University of California, Berkeley professor David Kirp asks why we’ve turned away from school integration, an education reform that has quite extensive evidence showing it worked:

“Economists’ studies consistently conclude that African-American students who attended integrated schools fared better academically than those left behind in segregated schools. They were more likely to graduate from high school and attend and graduate from college; and, the longer they spent attending integrated schools, the better they did.”
Indeed, during the 1970s and 1980s—the time when desegregation was in full force—the achievement gap closed faster than it ever has before or since. Why did we abandon such a successful intervention? Kirp writesthat “desegregation was too often implemented in ham-handed fashion, undermining its effectiveness,” but doesn’t go into detail.

In fact, the “ham-handed” way that busing was done in many cities is part of the reason for its downfall. Black students may have benefited, but there were many sacrifices that came along with busing—and not just long bus rides for black kids. Kirp doesn’t mention how black families viewed desegregation, and the flaws many saw in
