    I have often wondered about FLYPAPER as a name for an education policy publication, as it clearly brings to mind the irresistible final destination for winged carrion eaters who get stuck for life. Disgusting, but an entirely appropriate image to accompany Mike Petrilli's wistfully-anachronistic buzz down Big Testing's ideological memory lane.

    Petrilli no doubt got the memo to go after Governor Brown for his veto of California's new Endless Testing bill, and in doing so, Petrilli reminds us of all the reasons that his version of "accountability" should have never been allowed in the room to begin with. How any society could buy this thought-disordered, self-serving bullshit gets more mysterious to me by the hour. Perhaps it is just the time for things to finally come into hi-def focus.

    Education activists seek to collaborate with Occupy Wall Street

    A group of parents, educators, students and activists who have organized to work to eliminate high-stakes testing in public education is now seeking to collaborate with the Occupy Wall Street protest movement on specific demands regarding school reform.

    The movement, called United Opt Out National , encourages parents to use “opt out” rules in their school districts that allow students to stay home when standardized tests are given. They say that the focus on high-stakes standardized testing in the No Child Left Behind era has failed to improve student achievement and instead has narrowed curricula, wasted public resources and caused anxiety and fear in children and teachers.

This innovative housing community is a local Davis landmark and a nexus of innovative sustainable ideas; SCHA is actively negotiating with the University to ensure that the community persists.     Volunteers, under the guidance and supervision of licensed contractors and building professionals, will help renovate these landmark community structures in anticipation of a January re-opening. Join us for our fantastic four day work-party extravaganza to rebuild interiors, lay wheelchair-accessible pathways, paint, garden, make and serve food, and much more. If you can commit to one four-hour shift (or more), we can complete the work in just four days, minimizing costs, and keeping rents affordable at The Domes.

    When I read the list of proposed requirements for Madison Preparatory Academy, a charter school like no other, I couldn’t imagine a family sustaining its extremist schedule. Kids do require parental participation to succeed, and I’m doing my best with my own elementary and middle school sons, but busy working families already involved will be stretched to surreal limits with Prep’s curriculum. In fact, I don’t know who would want to give up family life and force their kids to things they have no talent for or interest in:
    WSJ: The first class of sixth-graders would attend school nearly year-round, be in class from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., with mandatory sports and extracurricular activities running until at least 6 p.m. and possibly later.

    Jim Fennerty is an old friend of mine. He is a progressive lawyer. In Chicago you will see his name in the paper now and then because he will be defending some politically unpopular case.
    He is a also active in the National Lawyers Guild. If you go to political rallies and demonstrations, you can always recognize Jim and other members of the NLG by their glowing green baseball caps with “legal observer” printed across the top.
    They’re present to make sure that the civil liberties, the right to protest for right, is not violated by the police or

    Rick Scott sure made a big deal out of signing SB 736 at the Jacksonville KIPP school of one of his cronies. Too bad it turned out to be one of Florida’s 15 failing charter schools last year. Scott’s embarrassing moment is back in the news. It seems that Duval’s school board is strongly considering not approving their application to open more schools in their district. From Jeffrey Solocheck of Gradebook:

    All over the country, the KIPP charter schools win accolades for their accomplishments as they take low income students and try to put them on a path toward success.

    In Duval County, not so much.

    Unimpressed with KIPP’s performance in Jacksonville — an F grade and declining student improvement, the Duval School Board is seriously considering not approving the charter group’s application to open more schools in the county, the Florida Times-Union reports.
