The city is packing more and more students into already overcrowded schools this fall, the Daily News has learned.

Reports of classes over the agreed size limits were also up across the city, teachers union officials said.

And some neighborhood kids are being turned away at their local schools, several principals and teachers complained Friday.

"It's a problem citywide; it's not just our school," said Rosa Maria Peralta, principal of the popular Public School 8 in the Bronx, who is searching for 100 spots at other schools for local kids who tried to register in the last week.

Sought-after PS 105 in Brooklyn is so flooded with kindergartners that the school added two new classes, but still had another 25 on its waitlist. "I wish we could take them all,

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said Friday that Mayor Rahm Emanuel "exploded" at her during a meeting about a longer school day for Chicago Public Schools.

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis says Mayor Rahm Emanuel “exploded” at her during a conversation in his office about his signature longer-school-day effort, pointing his finger at her, yelling and telling her, “F--- you, Lewis.”

“I just want to call it immense disrespect for me and the Chicago Teachers Union,’’ Lewis told the Chicago Sun-Times Friday. “I didn’t appreciate the way he talked to me.

“My father never talked to me like that. My husband’s never talked to me like that.”

Emanuel — long known for his salty rants — would not go into specifics Friday about the exchange, and said the meeting weeks ago ended with a hug from Lewis.

“I’m not going to get into a he-said, she-said. We had a good meeting. It was not a long meeting.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Friday that teachers have been “beaten down for too long” and endorsed “doubling’’ their salaries.

“We need to elevate teachers,’’ Duncan told a gathering of officials and educators in the fresco-ceiling library of Carl Schurz High School.

“I think we need to double salaries for teachers. We need to start them at a much higher level.”

Teachers “shouldn’t have to take a vow of poverty,’’ Duncan said. “Great teachers should have the chance to make — pick a number — $130,000, $140,000, $150,000.’’

But if President Obama’s new American Jobs Act is not passed, Duncan said, waves of teachers could be laid off across the land and class sizes could rise.

He said his three-day, six-state bus tour that ended Friday in his hometown of Chicago exposed him to “repugnant’’ stories about the threatened loss of 420

ILWU Shuts Down Tacoma and Seattle Ports, Smashes Longview Terminal

In response to police violence and employer intransigence, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) shut down the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, WA yesterday, the New York Times reported this morning. The ILWU has been in a year-long struggle at the new $200 million EGT Terminal in Longview, WA, where the employer (EGT) has been hiring non-union workers in violation of the ILWU contract. Earlier this week, union members blockaded trains from entering the port and were assaulted by police armed with rifles and rubber bullets, pepper spray and clubs. Many were arrested and injured.

Yesterday, around 500 longshoremen stormed the new terminal in Longview with baseball bats, smashing windows, damaging rail cars and dumping tons of grain from the cars, while over 1,000 more shut down the ports of Seattle and Tacoma by staying home from work (see the New York Times article). Please call your congressman today and ask him/her to vote NO on HR 2218 (see press release below). This bill is called the Empowering Parents Through Quality Charter Schools bill, but we believe that it only serves to empower charter school operators and not parents or students. Look at the list of endorsers if you doubt who is behind this.

Parents Across America has taken a position against HR 2218.

Because the vote is happening today, you need to keep your message short and strong. Parents do not want this bill – we want Congress to concentrate on help for all of our schools. We need to monitor the charter schools that exist now, not add more. Too many of the charter schools we have now are

* not providing a quality education
* not accepting more challenging students while pushing others out
* not operating in a transparent manner or offering parents a real voice in decision making, which is a key element for student progress
* raising too many unanswered questions – see PAA Fact Sheet detailing some of the problems and concerns raised about charter schools in just the past year.

Hey Fred,

It is hard to believe that things in Michigan could get worse than they already were. I know that Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana have taken the brunt of the attack on workers rights, but Michigan might have jumped into the lead with our crazy, wacko, sicko legislature.

As you already know, Michigan has been under assault all year long. It began with the passage of the Emergency Financial Manager package, continued with the taxing of pensions for retirees, and culminated in the defunding of almost a billion dollars of education funding from K-12 schools;

Janis Ian played tonight at Evanston SPACE, easily the best venue in Chicago without actually being in Chicago. We were trying to decide whether Janice Ian is a legend, an icon, or a national treasure. Pretty sure we went with "legendary folk artist," which is a smaller designation than "legend." We decided that in the pantheon of folk music, Joan Baez is probably an icon, which naturally also makes her a legend. I think I'll devote a future post to this topic.

I'm obsessed with a game called Who's Bigger? For example: Who's bigger--- Paul McCartney or Elton John? We recently killed an entire evening playing this game. For my younger readers, this is an example of something you do when you're old. We were kind of stuck on Janis Ian vs. Grace Slick, but we came down on the side of Janis Ian
