Academic studies criticize Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles’ leadership style, reform strategies
Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles is an unproven, ineffective leader implementing a reform strategy that has failed elsewhere, according to scathing academic papers about him released Wednesday.
The studies, where were written by university professors but financed by vocal Miles critic J. McDonald Williams, find that Miles has the wrong vision for Dallas ISD, has failed to include stakeholders and was hired with a sketchy record in Colorado. The papers don’t delve into new topics and largely explore issues and concerns with Miles previously raised by watchdogs and critics.
“Miles is clearly what you call a top-down reformer,” said Julian Vasquez Heilig, an associate professor at the University of Texas who wrote one of the studies. “They come in with disruptive change. This is the management approach with a one-size fits all approach to every school in the district.”
Heilig said that Williams hired him as consultant but never directed him to reach certain conclusions.
