CHICAGO — Thousands of demonstrators poured into Daley Plaza Wednesday afternoon to protest the proposed closings of 54 CPS schools, and about 150 were arrested when they sat down in the street in front of City Hall.
The protestors, who came in buses from all parts of the city, stood shoulder to shoulder and chanted in unison against closing schools across the city.
Shortly before 5 p.m., as some marched toward Chicago Public Schools Headquarters at 125 S. Clark St., about 150 sat down in the middle of LaSalle Street in front of City Hall. They locked arms and chanted, "Save our children." About 5:15 p.m., police started making arrests — but no one appeared to resist as they were taken to a city bus. All 150 were taken to custody within about 20 minutes.
