Subject: Consideration of Requests for Determination of Funding as Required for Nonclassroom-based Charter Schools Pursuant to California Education Code sections 47612.5 and 47634.2, and associated California Code of Regulations Title 5.

Type of Action: Action/Discussion
Subject: Consideration of "Reasonable Basis"/Mitigating Circumstances Requests for Determination of Funding as required for Nonclassroom-based Charter Schools Pursuant to California Education Code sections 47612.5 and 47634.2, and associated California Code of Regulations Title 5.
In addition to the above, the ACCS hereby provides notice that it reserves the right to consider and make recommendations at this meeting concerning other areas of the State Board of Education’s authority with respect to charter schools, which include but are not limited to:
  • Taking appropriate action, including, but not limited to, revocation with respect to State Board-granted and locally granted charters under specific circumstances set forth in statute.
  • Jointly with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, approving district-wide charter petitions when those petitions are determined to be satisfactory.
  • Developing and adopting regulations to implement various provisions of the Charter Schools Act of 1992 (Part 26.8 of the California Education Code, commencing with Section 47600). Approving or denying requests to waive otherwise applicable provisions of law based upon requests submitted by charter schools and other local education agencies.
  • Assigning numbers to charter school petitions to ensure that the statutory cap on the number of charter schools is not exceeded.

Notice is hereby given that the order of consideration of matters on this agenda may be changed without prior notice.
REASONABLE LIMITATIONS MAY BE PLACED ON PUBLIC TESTIMONY
The presiding officer of the Advisory Commission on Charter Schools (ACCS) reserves the right to impose reasonable time limits on public testimony to ensure that the agenda is completed.
SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS MAY BE MADE
Consistent with the requirements of the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act, notice is hereby given that special presentations not mentioned in the agenda may be made at this meeting. However, any such presentation will be for information only.

State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson


SACRAMENTO—The California Department of Education (CDE) today issued this week's Education Roundup of education-related announcements of public interest.
State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Congratulates California School for the Deaf in Fremont
California School for the Deaf, Fremont has been selected as Deaf Prep Football National Football Champions by the National Deaf Interscholastic Athletic Association. The CSDF Eagles also were featured in Sports Illustrated's online video series "Underdogs," External link opens in new window or tab. highlighting 10 high school football teams from around the country that battle major obstacles. The school received the news Tuesday that they finished second in the voting for the Sports Illustrated contest.
Competing against teams without the same disadvantages, the Eagles have concluded their best season ever with a record of 10-2, capturing a North Central II/Bay League Title, adding to the excitement on campus.
"California is home to some of the most extraordinary student-athletes in the world, and nowhere is that more clear than at the California School for the Deaf in Fremont," said Torlakson. "The Eagles exemplify the combination of personal effort and teamwork that is at the heart of success both on and off the field. My congratulations to them all and to the families, friends, coaches and teachers who helped them achieve."
Six California School Districts Win Federal Grants
Torlakson also congratulated five California school districts and one community organization for winning nearly $336,000 in U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm to School Grants. The funding is designed to help students understand the food they eat in school cafeterias often comes from local farms.
Community Alliance with Family Farmers (Davis, Yolo County) was awarded $100,000 to expand the Sonoma County Farm to School Program by educating students about healthy eating, nutrition, and local agriculture.
Ventura Unified School District (Ventura, Ventura County) was awarded $90,289 to start a countywide program to increase the quantity and quality of fresh, seasonal, locally grown foods eaten by students.
Julian Union School District (Julian, San Diego County) was awarded $32,871 to continue programs that support farm to school planning and its school wellness policy that includes sustaining a school garden.
Chico Unified School District (Chico, Butte County) was awarded $44,555 to expand and integrate its various farm to school resources, including hiring a coordinator and providing professional development and training for teachers.
Lemon Grove School District (Lemon Grove, San Diego County) was awarded $43,920 to support existing policies and programs on healthy nutrition and develop it into a farm to school program.
Lynwood Unified School District (Lynwood, Los Angeles County) was awarded $24,294 to plan a farm to school program.
