As three in every five new entrants to Metro Chicago’s labor force was Latino over the last decade, improving their academic outcomes is critical to ensure the region’s future economic vitality.
Building on research that demonstrates the profound effect that parents’ involvement in a child’s preschool years has on future academic success, the Latino Policy Forum launches the second year of its Abriendo Puertas (“Opening Doors”) program in Chicago, with the ambitious goal of equipping a total of 540 local Latino parents with the tools to build solid academic foundations for their children.

Polls Reveal Even Conservative Voters Favor Path to Legal Status for Unauthorized Immigrants
Immigration is a hot issue in the GOP primary debates, complete with extreme anti-immigrant rhetoric and far-fetched policy proposals. Michele Bachman, for example, promised to deport every undocumented immigrant in the country—a costly and unworkable task. And she’s not the only one. Herman Cain recently “joked” that he would electrify the border fence as a deterrent for unauthorized crossers. But Republican presidential candidates have it wrong when it comes to anti-immigrant rhetoric and their base. Recent polls suggest that a majority of conservative voters actually favor a path to legal status for unauthorized immigrants. In fact, several polls found that the majority of Americans prefer a path to legalization for unauthorized immigrants currently in the U.S.

Homeland Security Launches “If You See Something, Say Something” PSA’s in Spanish
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today unveiled new Spanish-language Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) “If You See Something, Say Something™” public awareness campaign during a roundtable meeting with Hispanic law enforcement groups at the White House.
The PSAs are aimed at reaching out to the Spanish-speaking public to encourage them to report suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
