Voters in Wake County, N.C. have shifted political power on the local school board, ending a Republican majority backed by leading conservative benefactor Art Pope that worked to end the system's nationally recognized desegregation policy.
In the Nov. 8 runoff race that pitted incumbent Democrat Kevin Hill, a lifelong educator, against Republican Heather Losurdo, a stay-at-home mom and Tea Party activist, Hill won with just over 52% of the vote in the strongly Republican district.
