Protest at Oakland child care centers droppedTuesday, August 31, 2010 MORE EDUCATIONA standoff between parents, community activists and the Oakland Unified School District over the closure of two low-income child care centers has ended with the children being diverted to other programs in the district. Members of the community group By Any Means Necessary had planned to occupy the two North Oakland centers all weekend and open them on Monday, but police evicted them late Friday. By then, parents and district officials and talked further, and though nobody was happy about the closures, most agreed to abide by the new arrangement, representatives of both sides said.
