Gov. Christie to announce charter school legislation
HOBOKEN AND BEYOND --Gov. Christopher Christie will be announcing legislation to support charter schools this Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Rue School building in Hoboken.
Charter schools are public schools usually founded by parents and educators. They get most of their funding through the public school system, but do not have to conform to all the laws governing regular schools, and are not involved with the teachers' unions.
New Jersey passed legislation in the mid 1990s to allow for the creation of charter schools. People wishing to found a charter school must apply to the state for a "charter."
