Mass. schools wary of regionalization

BOSTON—Many of the state's smaller public school systems are under pressure to merge with their neighbors in a move meant to cut costs, but at the same time many town officials are wary of losing local control.
Susan Palmer-Howes, chairwoman of the school board in Hopedale, tells The Boston Globe that towns don't want to lose their identity by joining a regional system. She says Hopedale is a small community where everyone knows everyone else, and people are concerned their community will lose that intimacy if it joins with Mendon and Upton, as has been discussed.
State officials have pushed small districts to consolidate or regionalize. Officials say sharing costs could save tens of millions of dollars while at the same time offering students a wider range of classes and programs.
