Controversial education reformer Michelle Rhee brought her get-tough-on-education stance to Sacramento on Monday, saying schools need to be run like Fortune 500 companies, but with student achievement replacing capital.

Kevin Johnson, the former NBA star who is now mayor of Sacramento, Calif., is angling to have more influence over how his city's schools are run.

Johnson, who is engaged to District of Columbia Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee, told the Sacramento Bee that he is paying close attention to who decides to run for school board this fall, and will even recruit candidates himself if he doesn't like who is in the race.

California law keeps mayors from running school districts, but that hasn't stopped Johnson from making his own mark in Sacramento education.

Yesterday Michelle Rhee came to town to enlighten us on how to fix our school systems by building political capital and partnering with business interests.

Perhaps Rhee likes to dabble and pontificate in Sacramento to temporarily escape the mess she’s created and continues to perpetuate as the superintendent of D. C. public schools.

Recently Rhee added 13 senior managers to her staff. These instructional superintendents or “cluster leaders,” will earn annual salaries of $120,000 to $150,000, and will cost D.C. taxpayers about $2 million in salary and benefits.

Rhee asserts that the hires will be budget neutral.
