New Jersey Education Commissioner Bret Schundler answers questions in Trenton.Schools already are successful
When Education Commissioner Bret Schundler promises to make New Jersey’s public education “the best in America” (“Merit pay proposed in school reforms,” May 6), he shamefully leaves out the fact we already are.
Objective measure after measure, (Nation’s report card, college attendance, graduation rates, AP exams) demonstrate the state’s public education success. Another recent article reported the average scores of New Jersey’s black and Latino students equaled the average of all of California’s students, and educational advisor to President Obama said the nation should follow New Jersey’s lead (“Budget cuts overshadow state’s progress in school funding parity,” April 29).
Schundler must acknowledge our state’s success is not due to unproven, politically popular fads such as merit pay, but rather through the tireless work of teachers with the proven support of parity funding. He’d then have to acknowledge our governor’s current actions threaten our state’s notable educational achievements.
