Gov. Chris Gregoire is scheduled to return to her hometown of Auburn to sign a package of education reform bills into law.
One of the bills getting final approval Monday could help the state compete in the federal government's Race to the Top program. One of its biggest changes allows the state to intervene in schools that are failing.
Another bill makes additional changes in the way Washington pays for basic education. It builds on recommendations from the state's Quality Education Council.
